I see he's been called up to the England squad as third choice keeper. He was on loan at Cheltenham last season, and I seem to remember he was pretty ****e against us? Or am I just making that up?

As I remember, Cheltenham as a unit were god awful on that day, Yates absolutely slated them for it.

No disrespect meant to Butland as I've heard he comes highly rated, but the fact that a goalkeeper who has only ever appeared in the fourth tier of English football is going to the World Cup is a daunting thought.

I suppose that, as third choice keeper, something horrific will have to happen for him to play, and that, as a future England keeper, it will do him good to experience being part of a major international tournament at such an early age. Still, considering how poor he was against us, and as other people have said, how he only has experience of playing in the football league's basement division, does seem a bit daft...

I think Arsenal were linked with him. I'd have Paulo over him any day!

One problem this shows is that there is not enough good English keepers out there, for people like Butland to feature when he is only 19 and has not played for his actual club is worrying, same sort of thing with Stockdale where he don't feature for Fulham much and he has been 2nd choice for England before, where are all the English keepers, we need some more, I would have thought someone like Loach or Smithies would feature for England on the bench soon or what about Fraser Forster who is out of loan from Newcastle, he is a good keeper.

Was at cheltenham that day and I too thought he was very, very average. Just looked like another League 2 goalkeeper, not bad but not particularly good either. Poor choice by Roy in my opinion. What about Scott Loach or Alex Smithies, both young (very early 20's) and have enough talent to play in the Premier League imo. Think Butland has been picked because he is so young (19?) and makes a bit of a statement about how the youth are being given a chance without having to play him as he is only third choice.

Was just about to ask the Cheltenham lot what they thought, but it seems they don't exist...
