Police have been alerted after a vile racist message directed at Pompey striker Izale McLeod was posted on Twitter. The offensive rant was tweeted to the clubâs official account last night as Pompey lost 3-2 at home to Leyton Orient. The message, directed at McLeod, 28, has sparked fury among fans and the club, which has today reported the incident to police. A Portsmouth Football Club spokesman said: âWe became aware of the incident last night and have reported the matter to the police. âPortsmouth Football Club is totally against any kind of racism in football and that is something that most of our fans agree with. âAnyone who doesnât is not welcome at Fratton Park.â The writer later back tracked after a torrent of abuse from furious Pompey fans was unleashed on the social networking website. He claims to be a 15-year-old boy, and tweeted: âI deeply apologise for the comment I made about McLeod I was just frustrated I didnât know what I was doing.â The message appears to have been removed from Twitter. Meanwhile McLeodâs wife Laura posted on Twitter earlier today: âIzale just had call from club they have contacted the police after fans have been racially abusing him on twitter #badtimes.â How can anyone be so crass ?! What an obnoxious prat.
The actual tweet was removed after a number of Pompey fans let him know just what was what. It was 1 boy (not fans plural). They are so incrediby stupid and moronic at that age. However, what is concerning is why he thought he could do that in the first place.
Personal abuse of players from your own side, as a supporter, should NEVER happen, racial or otherwise. How can such attacks have anything but a detrimental effect on the individual or team? For me this includes all kinds of negative abuse, including booing the side of after a crap performance
Yes, I had a strange warm feeling when he scored today. 3rd highest scorer in L1 and getting abuse Pah! You're in L1 and still in admin, who do some of your fans expect you to sign/loan? I understand he even scored in the last game from a pen after missing one. That's actually the sort of character Pompey will need this season.
You all do know don't you that it was one 15 year old boy - not fans plural and he quickly retracted and apologised as soon as the other Pompey fans gave him what-for.
Agreed PM - you could tell from his apology that he knew he'd done wrong. When the police turn up at his door (if they haven't already done so) he will be even more sure of his wrong-doing. Just begs the question - who around him is letting him think it was okay behaviour? His profile even named his school - they also ought to be getting a visit.
What is to be done though. Twitter is here to stay I imagine and I suppose we will always have teenagers incapable of thought. It seems that internet users are coming round to the idea that what they write on the internet can quickly catch up with them IRL.
That is just staggering PL Stewie. Why would anyone not want peace? I hope he recovers with no lasting effects. I can't work out whether the world is getting more brutal or that the internet has opened a window to show us what a brutal species humankind really is.
Wishing a long jail sentence on them is certainly understandable. But to be honest I'm not that sure that prison is actually a deterrent for many crimes, and it can harden them. A long sentence of community service might be the best punishment - because, if they get the right placement, they are surrounded by people who will find this crime abhorrent and may actually influence their attitudes. Either that.......... or as Wooperts suggests, a public flogging.
