Same lad that told me it was Mon 48 hours before it was confirmed. Don't shoot the messenger. I'd be quite happy with this as he would play the holding role so much better than any of the current squad and he is a great team player too. Loves playing against the craas as well. Lol
If MoN thinks he can do a job for us that is good enough for me. Still wouldnt mind Pav coming in as well
I'm quite happy with this..if true. Could do a short term job and bring along the likes of Wickham...
Only happy if this is a short gap solution, but it was being reported earlier today that we would have to sign him on a permanant contract to acquire him. Bolton were not prepared to release him on a loan deal. A few sources were reporting that he was looking for an 18 month contract....aye use him as a stop gap then a general squad player when we get someone decent in. Incidently for me Mr Bentdner has not done enough for me to warrant going for him on a permanant basis
Sunderland eye bid for Bolton striker Davies Kevin Davies By Graeme Anderson Published on Thursday 26 January 2012 09:35 SUNDERLAND are considering offering Bolton Wanderers’ icon Kevin Davies a permanent deal in order to clinch his move to the Stadium of Light. The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and his availability has attracted a string of interested clubs. But none have offered the striker a permanent contract so far and Sunderland know that doing so would see them steal a march on their rivals. Davies is one of the highest earners at the Reebok and manager Owen Coyle is known to favour a drive towards younger players on lesser wages. But the forward’s wages are not sky-high by Premier League standards and well within Sunderland’s range. A sticking point could be the type and length of the contract. Sunderland’s plan was to look only at loan deals in the current window but that would leave them likely to be disappointed, with Davies more likely to stay at the Reebok and leave at the end of the season. The hard-working, experienced forward originally wanted a two-year extension to his stay at the club he joined in 2003. Initially he was offered a one-year deal but Bolton have subsequently withdrawn that and Davies, who has found his first-team place no longer guaranteed, seems certain to leave. Wolves, West Brom, Celtic and Rangers have all been linked with an interest, but in many ways Davies could be perfect for Sunderland right now. He offers the squad something it currently lacks – physical power and presence up front, the ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play and above all vast experience. Martin O’Neill refused to be drawn on any interest Sunderland might have. “You couldn’t ask me to comment on other team’s players,” he said. But he did confirm: “The loan market is something that ourselves and others are looking at but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of stuff happening. “We had a passive interest in things but the Nicklas Bendtner situation – with him being out for weeks – means that it is now something that we really have to look at. “We are left with several up and coming young strikers now and three or four tough months ahead of us. “A lot of deals are dependent on what other clubs do. Teams are unlikely to want to sell too many good players in the window. But I have to look at bolstering the squad and see if we can do something if at all possible. “It’s the right thing to do. “Nicklas Bendtner or Stephane Sessegnon for example could have come through January fine and then got injured in the first week of February, and that’s what we’ve got to look to guard against.” Davies’ best days are undoubtedly behind him but a permanent deal might still make sense. He’s a model pro and would undoubtedly be a positive influence on a youthful squad. And with Sunderland bristling with young and energetic players, the veteran would not need to be relied on to run himself ragged in games as he has done for the past decade. On top of that, with former boss Steve Bruce having looked to add goals from other areas in the summer, other than his front men, Sunderland would not need the Bolton captain to be prolific. Midfielders Seb Larsson, Craig Gardner, David Vaughan, Jack Colback, James McClean and Kieran Richardson have all got on the scoresheet and would no doubt thrive on Davies’ ability to take the knocks up front and hold the ball upfield.
He is obviously not the 'wow factor' signing which many of our fans crave..However, MON seems to be in the mould of Brian Clough, in that he brings in players to fit into the team, so if he thinks he can do a job for us, then he will have my backing...
I think the end of this piece says it all. He is a model professional and would benefit the young lads like Campbell, Wickham and even Bendtner. He is a total team player as well and holds the ball up well. With the likes of Sessegnon, McClean, Vaughan, Gardener and Cattermole to do the leg work, his age isn't important imo and he is a very naturally physically fit bloke anyway. 18 months is a good deal for both parties as well. Even if we buy again in the summer, he will be a terrific squad player to have around. It's a no brainer to me.
If we do bring in a Davies or heaven forbid Heskey, it should only be a loan otherwise too much money being tied up for somebody i.e. a striker we really need. In fact if we do end up with a panic buy it just shows we should have been moving some somebody better earlier not waiting till summer, it s a case of a 'half penny worth of tar'
I think we are clearly looking at the 'now situation' as opposed to the summer which indeed should be quite different. MoN has only be our manager for a few weeks he's surely not going to work miracle's on the transfer market in January. I'm sure he's more concerned about keeping a steady team that work's well together to pick up enough point's to see us comfortably staying in this league. I think the timing, to get someone like Davies in this particular transfer window which isn't the best of window's will work well, and help us to achieve staying in this league. A few weeks ago it certainly wasn't looking that way. KTF
why would bolton loan davis out when his contract runs out at the end of the season? ****ing hell man
Still a no from me what do we pay coaches for if not to bring on the younger players? too old and doesn't even play for his own team so why would he be any better for us? If we do get him he'll get the customary couple of months and as said will trust MONs judgement on this one just hope I'm wrong but, can't see him being any good for us.
My worry is that hes being kept out of the Bolton team by that plank Ngog, which is a bit scarry, however as has been said he would bring a lot of experience to help Ji and Whickham, as a loan deal seems unlikely then an 18 month contract seems OK to me. He would bring a lot of strength to the front line and has the ability to hold the ball up and bring our deadly midfield into shooting positions, I never thought Id use the words deadly, shooting and midfield in the same sentence whilst talking about Sunderland, but happy days.
8 League goals last year. 10 overall. nothing to be dismissed. if he can help us thru a tough patch, why not?
I was rather down when I first saw this news then I thought about it. Since Davis has been out of the Bolton side they have gone from being almost a top 10 team to being in a relegation fight. If its short term and its to save money so MON can sign the ones he really wants in the summer then I think its a good move. Wickham will learn a lot from him. Remember MON signs these sorts of players, I said this when he first took over, don't expect too many unknown foriegn imports as its just not MON's style.
I hope no more than an 18 month contract if true, but a loan option to end of season would be my 1st choice on another note, why would he come to sunderland if he thought he would end up sitting on the bench like he does at Bolton (if Bendtner and rest are fit)?
