I posted a thread last night, when I was a boy, and it got 38 posts, do I get a prize? No, not after a prize really, I enjoyed the stories so thanks to all who told theirs, so what the hell am I rambling about now, have you noticed how my rambling gets worse? Wonder if itââ¬â¢s just age, still donââ¬â¢t need those tenna pants mind. Anyhow, it got me thinking how these forums, football and life itself are not just about now, us, our hopes but about times gone by, memories and all of those who came before us, made us what we are as people and made our football club what it is today. At the Chelsea game, at half time the grand in your hand draw took place, people chatted about the first half, the week they had had, what the second half may bring. Many had left and gone for whatever on the concourse and a little elderly man came out to do the draw. His legs looked a little bowed and stiff, his hair was long and grey and he received some polite applause, it was wee Bobby. I often see him coming into the ground, usually with Monty and they walk in unnoticed, I wonder how many of the younger fans watching, waiting for autographs of their heroes of today, I wonder how many know? Know just how big a hero the little man who just walked past was and is. I love to read the memories of you lot on this forum because it reminds me it makes me laugh and it keeps alive those times gone by and keeps alive the memory of the wee men like Bobby, heroes of their day.
SYD, like you Im a 1948 youngan, when I was 16 [1964] used to work on the Walls bacon vans, all over the Northeast and Scotland. friday, sat, sun, we used to go to the bowling alley, not much money about in those days eh? anyway we used to play with a couple of safc APPOS, just normal lads like us, end of the night we would all buy chips just 200 yards from the Mecca, walk over the bridge to park lane bus station or stop and try to chat up any young lasses who were heading home, scroll forward nine years, and these two ordinary Appos were now pro footballers, and what a delight , to know they were FA cup winners, pride of Sunderland then, pride of Sunderland now, as you said SYD heros, those two APPOS were Bobby Kerr and Billy Hughes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,legends to me, ordinary working class legends, and not bad bowlers either.
I'm only a 49er so don't have the same long experience that Syd and Bill have. We used to play against Ryhope Grammar and Ritchie Pitt was the big gangly centre-half we couldn't get past. Nowt spectacular but effective. Then, ten years later, there he is standing at the top of the Wembley steps with a Sunderland shirt on and a Cup Winner's medal round his neck. Maybe we can celebrate the 40th anniversary of that day with another 11 Sunderland shirts at the top of the Wembley steps in May, 2013? How many local lads will there be in the team? And how many of their mates will be on this forum in 2053, telling Syd how they used to go bowling with Jordan Henderson?

A little more up to date but my son worked in a big DIY store some years ago and Danny Dichio caught him. I need a drill he said, can you help me. My boy took him over to the drill section and took him through them, corded, cordless. hammer and the like, I will have that one said Danny with the obvious theory the most expensive mustbe the best. Fine said my boy, do you need drill bits he asked, what are they asked Danny, ho do I nned them he said when being shown them, I thought the drill made the holes. A good lad was Danny, goodjob it was his legs that he used not his head.
