Noone would have believed we could have been in that position at the start of the season. It has been superb. What we've been throuh the last few weeks will stand us in great stead next year, and we've had a brilliant season to remember for many years to come. The future's bright. COYS.
We won't beat Chelsea and even if we did then they will happily roll over for Leicester on the last day if required. It's all over.
It's been a wonderful season from such a young team. I hope that we have the funds to add real quality to the squad to go again next year. I'd hope we can fund 2 forwards, a couple of midfielders and a central defender. I know we have great potential prospects and some quality on the bench but we're still short of real game changing talent and options. We're at a crossroads in the development of our club as we were in 2010. Then, we signed: Sandro; Cudicini; Gallas; Pletikosa (on loan) and the wonderful Van der Vaart. Those signings were collectively inadequate for the needs of our development. We needed a quality forward and cover on the wings. We signed no such players. Sandro's first season in the PL was patchy. Cudiini and Pletikosa added little. VdV was excellent. Within 3 years we'd lost our star players and bought Soldado, Paulinho and the rest with the Bale money. That we have bounced back as quickly from those mistakes is thanks to our manager and our young players. If we are not to repeat history, we need to learn from it. I implore Joe Lewis to do something bold now. In his trading he is known for just that. It's time to do something similar in this instance and help us make the leap forward. We're being linked with some very talented players. They'll come to play for this manager with the players that we have. We have really good people at bringing in new players. Let's be a little more bold and press or advantage. Audere est Facere Joe?
Oh cmon, let it go. It's over. We can lose 2 of our 3 games and still take the title. We will beat a poor Everton at home to lift the trophy in front of our own fans Bliss
You will certainly win the title, you have had a fantastic season when everything that could possibly go your way, has done, Leicester were fated to win it. It will still be an awful advertisement for English football though, but there is no rule saying teams have to win in style.
Totally agree. Just gotta learn from not properly investing when we made the CL last time. A few quality additions to this excellent first XI and we'll have another very good season.
Mate we're ****ing winning it next year In all seriousness, our losses and draws highlight the weaknesses in the squad, our first XI is nigh-on perfect in my opinion but we don't have someone to provide additional fire-power alongside Kane and we don't have anyone to come on and shore up the midfield if Dier doesn't play/ goes off. I think those two positions, plus whatever extras Poch may see, are pivotal to a successful campaign next year. It's crazy to think we're on course to finish second in which we've had to contend with European games, with just one striker, imagine what we'd have done with two!
What's you mean about it being an awful advert for English football? Personally think that small clubs like Spurs and Leicester being the top two has been magnificent for English football and has increased global interest levels 10 fold.
It's an awful advert for the prem that until this season only Chelsea, United, City, Arsenal had won the title apart from 1 season with blackburn back in 1995. Its an awful advert for the prem that, apart from spurs, only chelsea, city, united, liverpool and Arsenal have appeared in the group stages of the CL since 2001. This season has been great. I am gutted we won't be champions but am proud of our team but calling Leicester a bad advert comes across as bitter imho. Ain't digging at other spurs fans but just think we need to accept we came up short and congratulate the winners.
A better conclusion would be that we are pretty good at signing players at less than £15m and developing youth. Lets keep doing it rather than trying to compete with those with more money. The starting eleven last night cost about what we sold Bale for. More of that sort of signing please.
We've been good at finishing 5th too. It's up to Mauricio Pochettino what he wants. If he calls on us to spend £35m on a player, I want him backed in the same way as we would sign Gallas, Louis Saha and Ryan Nelsen. It's time to be bold. We've never had a better chance in my lifetime and I'm closing in on retirement.
Of course he is. He's got weight to his wumming due to Leicester doing well..but a wum he is. He would be gloating like a **** if he never feared some pelters.
As a Saints fan I was a bit annoyed with Spurs nicking yet another of our managers as well as snapping up one of our better defenders. It is not surprising to see what has been achieved at white Hart lane under Poch but my fear would be that he must now be amongst the most fancied young managers operating in Europe and you may well find yourself struggling to keep him. This season has been terrific. I must admit that I really thought that Spurs would snap the title from Leicester and could not see you dropping any points over the last four games whereas I still feel Leicester will only pick up a win against Everton in their final match. For me, Leicester are going to be winning the title for all the smaller clubs and their performance this season is a healthy repost to teams like Man Utd, Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea who can claim a top four position even of they have an average season. I really hope that 2015/16 proves to be a sea-change. I have my fingers crossed that West Ham and Man City finish in the top four along with SPurs and Leicester as these teams have offered the most entertainment this season. It will be great to see other teams have a shout in the Champions League, especially as Arsenal's presence always feels like a waste of time. They have had their moment in the sun and I really hope that they go in to a Liverpool-like decline and let a new breed of club (including Southampton!) breath new life in to English football so that the silverware can be spread more evenly. I think Spurs will probably lose to Chelsea and Leicester wrap up the league through THFC failing to pick up points as opposing to winning them for themselves. However, I think Spurs can consider this to be a good season and maybe reflective of the changing fortunes in the EPL. Spurs have played their part in what has been a great season this year.
There seems to be a pathological inability amongst Saints fans to process the fact that Alderweireld was contracted to a team called Atletico Madrid at the time that we signed him. Other than this factual inaccuracy, I am willing to overlook the whole Pochettino "I'll leave if Nicola leaves" story for another time and instead thank you sincerely for what is a really balanced post that probably reflects the thoughts of the average fan not made of plastic across the country. Yes, Poch is now a big name in the game, but it would be madness for him to leave now - especially if whoever comes calling is a fellow PL side. We have the youngest squad in the division, an academy that is finally copying the success rates of your own fine developmental institutions (so that we don't have to pinch your players any more ), a shiny new stadium on the horizon and the core of a simply world class starting XI. I'd also say that Koeman will be one under a bit of scrutiny from the predators over the summer. He has managed the club superbly over 2 seasons of watching his squad being dismantled by the likes of United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid's team of lawyers yet has held things together impressively capably. I know a number of Arsenal fans who would have him at the Library in a heartbeat. Anyways, thank you again for your positive sentiments I've always had a lot of time for Southampton. Well-run club who play the game the right way. Just a shame that a bit of bizarre enmity has crept in between us over us 'stealing' Toby and 'poaching' Pochettino. If you're gonna hate us for anything, surely it would be Levy buying back Bale's sell-on fee for £2.50 and a second hand Britney Spears CD?
