Been reflecting on last Saturday's game. Well, my blue nose friends have been helping, of course. For anyone not there, I felt it was a strange one. First twenty minutes we looked OK. The goal helped, and Adam and Nathaniel were looking quite assured just in front of the travelling fans. Everton woke up, blew us away and then nodded off again for the second half during which we looked like honest plodders hoping for a lucky break. In my long experience of discussing footie with scousers, I have always found Evertonians the most knowledgeable. Last night in the pub the consensus was that we wouldn't go down, but it was going to be a hard season for us on the evidence of the second half. It was this second period that had me most anxious, to be honest. Everton's purple patch was as good as most things I've seen this season and their fans tell me that this is typical of how they have played at times this season, leaving the opposition chasing shadows. Few teams will live with that. But in the second half we looked pedestrian and I was left to ponder whether this was: a) shell shock leading to loss of confidence b) caused by us having players who simply don't think quickly enough. Jay Rodriguez was a case in point. He looks the business at times, but when asked to think quickly just seemed fractionally slow. It seems too easy to simply say that x is not good enough or player y is crap. There was a disturbing malaise about the team on Saturday. I have every confidence that if any manager can sort it out it is Nigel Adkins. Just thought I'd share some honest views from football daft scousers and get a view from fellow Saints.
some good points Channon, but we must remember htis is a huge and long learning curve. I really believe we have to learn on the run and yes, quickly. It is going to take time and just when we take a step forward we may take one or two backward ones. That is what we must do though, keep striving to get it right and working to improve. There ws jsut no way we were going top rock up, play four or five games and say "Hey we've got the hang of this now". It is going to take time and despite what people say, we do have time.
Have to take the 'you won't go down' comments with a pinch of salt as Evertonians were probably being polite.
I think we were also going for a bit of a damage limitation as we cannot keep shipping 5 or 6. If Ramirez had scored instead of prodding just wide then it would have been 3-2 with 15 mins late.
Well we have 32 games to get something like 35 points , learning curve or not others have done on less than our resources .
and many, many more have failed. Anyway, what's your point. What do you really want? Do you weant Adkins out? I think this is what you really want but just don't have the balls to state it.
Just quoting mine and not the other supposed negative ones ? Of course not , no I dont , you obviously only read want you want to , if you cae to read some of my previous psts you will see I have not written for his sacking nor Corteses departure , only reasons why ? You being a tad afflicted probably wont register with that fact though...............
You stated I wanted Adkins out ? Where does it read that or where have I written it ? I believe thats speculation ? Didn't you write about speculation only 10 minutes ago (Cortese on taking no for an answer)? Only the afflicted would contradict themselves in such a way , if a person as you say of low intellect (1st insult thank you) thought this out anyone would..................................
Two really good laughs on here. The first is Fran suggesting that Evertonians were being polite. No, they say what they mean and these are mates I've known for years. They were very nice to me when we were in the brown stuff, but still were very quick to summarise when we were struggling under Portaloo - "Your'e F***ed" was their usual polite observation! The other is the idea that had Ramirez scored the final score would have been 3-2. Don't think so. More likely they'd have woken up again and scored a couple more. This is the point. Everton are a good side and always looked to have something left in the tank, whereas we looked plodding. Overall, I'm with you, SS, and not for the first time. Yes, it's a steep learning curve and when we get to play teams that don't have realistic top 4 ambitions we'll start picking up points. But confidence is fragile, especially with a young team. As I say, if anyone can keep the collective peckers up it is Nigel. His management is going to seriously tested, but I have every confidence he'll see us through.
This. We have some technically excellent players and can play some fantastic football. I can see us winning games even if we lose some too. We'll get better, bt we must remember that the top teams and top managers take years to get where they are.
Nope, he asked you if you wanted Adkins out, then said that he suspected the answer might be "yes" but you haven't responded. Here goes for another try: DO...YOU...WANT...ADKINS...OUT?
Onion The tears must be blurring your vision go up to the post before that , please , I thank you oh and don't jump in , don't be like the rest read the thread or at least a page to get a grasp of what's going on .
I bet your Everton mates also said they dont really have huge top 4 ambitions either , I have not met one who does , top 6 yes but not top 4 , dont have a large enough squad for that .
I notice that, like the OP, you live in Liverpool. In which case you'll know that Evertonians are very astute, as described by Channon, but also constantly pessimistic (it avoids disappointment) a bit like Saints fans .... Everton will do well and finish above that pile of .... across the park, and we will finish well above the relegation zone (and above LFC). Bloody hell, a double positive. Time for a lie down.
I think they may fall short of being ahead of Liverpool which is a shame but I think their squad will pull them through , Liverpools squad is stronger just . It will be a great result if we finish 17th , I think Reading and Norwich could struggle this year which leaves the dreaded 18th place up for grabs or not , from looking at the game last night West Ham will be fine and QPR will be around us all season . Everton fans always seem to me to be far more grounded BUT you do get the delusional ones who think they are still just behind United , and Liverpool in England .
