On this day, 1999, a night to remember...Oh Ruud Gullit, you dropped the wonder boy..It cost you your job. FTM Newcastle United 1-2 Sunderland, 1999 Ruud Gullit can look back on this match and know that it was Sunderland that effectively ended his time at Newcastle. As the two huge rivals met at St James's Park, the manager took an unpopular and, in hindsight, ill-advised risk by leaving Alan Shearer on the bench. With the rain lashing down, and lightning forking across the sky, the weather really was like something out of the bible, and it would be a new Sunderland strike force that would do the damage, in the form of Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn. Despite Kieron Dyer, who somehow wasn't injured for this one, putting the hosts in front, first Quinn, and then Phillips turned the game on its head, and left the home fans hurting. The goal will live long in the memory of Sunderland fans, who can close their eyes and see the ball looping from Phillips' foot and over Tommy Wright's head. ..................................................Sorensen............................................... ..Makin...................Butler.............................Bould.............Gray............ ..Summerbee........Rae................................Shwarz........McCann .....................................Quinn.........SKP.........................................
Yes on my Birthday I remember it very well, watching it on MOTD with Travis 'Why does it always rain on me' playing on the closing credits. Great birthday pressie.
no end credits with Travis playing unfortunately. this game is the only thing i can think about whenever i hear this song *goose bumps*
Oh how I'd love the Winterwasp in our current squad! Along with SKP and Quinny. Exciting times back then, loved it!
my birthday as well pal. i was in Portugal that year, up the west coast driving round frantically to find news/somewhere to watch it. had just split up with my ex, and what a fun, great season that was.
nasty day at work to be fair! started at 5:00am, finished at 7:30pm. just one of them days - politics, bullshit and more of the same. just tucked into a nice glass of vino though. hope you've had a more fun day pal... a good result tonight will be enough for me....all the best
