That a Mr M Nurse paid a mere £800,00 to rescue our club from the guaranteed demise under the grip of a certain Mr Petty. THANK YOU MEL !! Two simple questions to commemorate this momentous event in our clubs history..... 1. What value would you put on the club now, just 10 years later? 2. Who makes you're all time Swansea team in that period (starting eleven and seven subs if you want and they have had to have played in the last 10 years?) I appreciate it may be a Premier League team bias on your choices, but I recon a few of our guys from yesteryear could sneak in!
It's bad form to answer you're own thread but hopefully to start the ball rolling... I'm no expert in these matters but I think the powers that be heads would definately turn for £90 million for the club. Team of the decade........I'm going attack orientated ...... -------------Vorm--------------- Rangel---Williams---Monk------Taylor ------Bodde------Allen----------- Dyer-------Gomez------Sinclair -----------Scotland--------------- Subs----De Vries, Caulker, Tate, Britton, Andy Robinson, Trundle, Graham. What a squad! oh and Buck as manager!
To put Mel's investment into perspective you can buy this for £800,000 grand today...... Now let me think that over..............
Here's my shot and my knowledge is pretty slim of any time before say 2006 in the last 10 years ... -------------Vorm--------------- Rangel---Williams---Caulker---Taylor ------Bodde------Allen----------- Dyer-------Borini------Sinclair ----------Graham---------------- Subs----De Vries, Monk, Jazz, Graham, Britton, Pratley, Gomez. A tough call, but if we're going for the best XI etc to play in the Prem then this is what I would go with. Honorable mentions to Scotland, Dobbie, Gower, Anderson, Tate, Painter et al. For me Caulker is in before Monk - kid is class and then some. Allen and Bodde at his best would be an awesome pair behind Borini (he is starting for Roma these days). The thought of Borini / Sinclair / Dyer criss-crossing behind Graham, with Allen / Bodde hitting long cutting passes for these guys ... well I'd put them up against Man City any day. Buck as manager with Sousa alongside him on the bench - I doubt that there's a tactical situation that these two couldn't figure out together.
For our younger readers Mel Nurse saved our club, from an a*s ho*e called Petty. Any one for a Mel Nurse stand ?
that's definately worth a thread on it's own smelters...feel free to stick it up (let's not get this one sidetracked)
good call Anderson and it was a close run thing about Monk/Caulker but I had to go on Monk over just 3 games for Caulker (however if he comes back as good as he seemed before the injury....I would have to concede). I still can't believe I forgot Borini in my line up though DOH!
I had forgotten about him too without your prompt .... which is why I stopped to think about who else I might be over looking and came up with Anderson. Can you imagine Borini in this line-up .... scary to think how lethal Borini, Dyer, Graham, and Sinclair could be together. I also put Jazz ahead of Tate on the bench .... I can hear the grumblings now.
It does seem a lot of our current players are getting into the team... I can't think of many in the first 5 years of this...But I'll have a crack GK - De Vries - Has played a huge part in our rise up the leagues over the last few years, and has had a lot of great games, and pulled off some great saves. A fan favourite. Honourable mention - Vorm, Freestone, Tate RB - Rangel - It has to be that man, he has truely been fantastic for us over the last 4-5 seasons? Really is what this club is all about, very consistans, good with the ball, loves to attack! fantastic. - Can't even think who was our RB before Rangel...with Jacket? ummm Amankwaah! haha. Tate! CB - Ash Williams - Again, no question Ash is in this team. He has been incredible for, mostly consistant, gets the odd goal, and the constantly improving, and so reliable, the amount of games he has played for us and Wales over the last 3 years is outstanding - HM - Dennis Lawrence, Tate. CB - Gazza Monk - What a player he has been for us over the last 8? seasons. An inspirational captain, and has been at the heart of this club, and constantly put in great displays. Is 33 now, and won't always have good games, but for me, deserves to be in this team - HM - Irikpen, Caulker, Austin, Tate. LB - Taylor - A tough one, our left back has constantly changed, when you consider how much Rangel has played. Neil edged it here, a lot of pace, fairly solid in defence, and links up well with Sinclair - HM - Painter (came close, was a good player) Bessone, Rickets (was he right or left?) Tate CM - Bodde - Without a doubt the most gifted player the Swans have had in thier team for atleast the last 10 years, and probably more in my opinion. A real delight to watch, scored some incredible goals, makes some great passes, such a shame! HM - Gower, Pratley CM - Allen - His form this season has won it for me...I remember seeing him when he started off and he was putting in MOTM performances, and then his next game would be awful, I remember saying how he wouldn't be in the team for long, glad I was wrong. - HM - Britton (harsh not to put him in, but such a difficult choice) Augustien (There must be others) AM - Borini - Another tough choice, but this guy was brilliant, and has to be put in the team somewhere. A real quality player who had great strength and pace, and would most certainly do well in the team now. - HM - Dobbie (he would have been there, great player) Gomez RM - Dyer - No question, a fantastic, fantastic! player. So much quality, and so much pace. A real joy to watch, and i'm so pleased he is at Swansea...Good job Bobby Martinez - HM - Anderson (fantastic player in the league 1 winning season) Leon Britton ( I loved it when he used to get a Gueret long throw and burst up the field!) LM - Sinclair - A modern day Trundle, a real delight to watch again, and has scored some incredible and important goals for us...again lucky to have him at Swansea. - HM - Robinson, McLoud CF - LEE JASON DANNY Trundle! - IT just has to be Lee trundle. Such an important player for Swansea, and he does edge it for me, even though the Jason was brilliant for us, and Danny Graham is showing real quality with a football - HM - Pintado, KUQI, Buaza, Borini, Fallon, Akinfenwa, Knight I'm sure people will disagree with me over certain players...But it's good fun to do...There are deffinitely players i have missed...The names which keep cropping up are Owain Tudor Jones, and Sylvain Melsien! Fail much
respects to the choices Rhys .... going for DeVries over Vorm??!!! Interesting choice there and a great call on Freestone as he was still with us of course. As you brought up honourable mentions...Leon Knight as impact player with Walter Boyd as super impact sub if someone needed clattering in the last 10 seconds and Nick Cusack for trying to steady a very rocky ship!
Wouldn't make the best 11 in the last decade, but Trunds and Robbo gave me the greatest entertainment during that time <br>
What a 10 years... Vorm Rangel Taylor Williams Monk Bodde Allen Gomez Dyer Sinclair Graham Subs: Freestone, Trundle, Caulker, Borini, McLeod, Robinson, Pratley
@Rhysj1 ... nice line-up and appreciate the commentary. Freestone is the keeper I couldn't remember (duh!) and is probably a great shout even ahead of Vorm and DeVries - he kept shutouts without the defense and posession obsession we have today. Trundle is an interesting choice in that line-up ... and begs the question - close in finisher Graham or Trundle. @ScottSwan ... Gomez over Borini .... another interesting call and contest between two players ... who would be the best dead-ball specialist (after Bodde that is).
Yankee - Bodde Wasn't a fantastic dead-ball specialist imo...The only one I can remember is Doncastor away (0-4) But he could strike a ball! Interesting talk on finishers between Trunds and Graham. We have seen Trunds do it consistantly, but watching videos of Graham, some of his finishes were Prem class. Tough one...And then of course Scotland, who was also a deadly finisher. tough call
