It was brought up earlier.....who's for a Mel Nurse stand??

Discussion in 'Swansea City' started by swimaway, Nov 2, 2011.

?

Does Mel Nurse deserve a stand after saving us from oblivion?

  1. Yes, a Mel Nurse stand is deserved.

  2. A commemorative is required, but we have to remeber the others involved

  3. Not a stand, but another sort of memorial in the stadium

  4. Nothing required, Mel would be more than happy with the seeing the Swans sitting pretty!

After 10 years from spearheading a buy out that saved us from oblivion....

Does he solely deserve a stand? Is the current stadium and lofty position of the Swans enough? Does he deserve another sort of memorial in the ground?

    all yours....

Glad to here you are on the mend. Things are good.....it would be better if the missus stopped spending all my dosh and buying loads of ****e for Christmas though (got to love her though!). The kids are going to get spoilt again and I will get a new pair of socks, a bottle of Hai Karate and nice bank statement for Crimbo!

I'm all for a Mel stand although as option 2 suggests he was not alone in rescuing the club.

As we are in our centenary season (is it this season or next) .... we should mark the occasion by naming the stands after key people going all the way back to 1912. Perhaps not on a permanent basis going forward but on a rotating basis season after season, with some sort of plaque going on a display near Ivor's monument after the season in which the stand was named after them. Each season would see a different set of people honored; maybe the Allchurch stand being the one permanent fixture.

Think of who we could honor in this way .... past players from the 20's, 30's and so on. Players that hold landmark records. Key managers. Toshack for his role in taking us into the old Div 1. One stand could be named the Vetch. And so on - some perhaps not so popular. It would promote the Swans brand, promote and introduce the legacy of the club to young / new / current supporters.

Nice idea, Yankee. I know that many people prefer stability in these things but North, South, East and West stands do sound a bit bland and uninspiring. Rotating the names affords the opportunity to honour a number of people/players because to select only four out of the many who have been great servants to the club would almost be impossible.

I'd say that Alan Curtis, if anyone, deserves something named after him. He was involved in the rise under Toshack, but he's been involved with the club for longer than anyone else associated with it (to my knowledge anyway...).

Alan Curtis is a good shout Scott.

Harry Griffiths, Tosh, Jeremy and Mel Charles are some others just to name a few. I'd also like to see something for Lee Trundle because he didn't half raise the profile of the club, we could even do something for all the players that have played in all 4 divisions too

This is going to be controversial I think, but I don't think we should name the stands after anyone , the reason why is threefold, the first is that it's not our stadium, second the rights should be sold as in the name of the stadium, thirdly we share the stadium with the ospreys, so what would happen if they wanted to name a stand the robert jones stand ?

They are an equal partner in the stadium, and naming a stand for a football player who has no meaning for rugby fans should not be considered IMO , also I don't think mel nurse would want that in any case.

Well it seems a hung vote so far..... no overall majority held by anyone category. As it would be impossible for the Yes voters to form a co-alition with the others, then it looks like......

No Mel Nurse stand wins but some sort of other memorial/tribute would have to be negotiated if they could get the straight nothing required voters on side!

I know he spearheaded saving the club but i think getting a stand named after him is a bit much. Fergie has had to manage united for 25 years, make then the most successful english league club, win on average more than 1 trophy per year, including the top European club trophy twice and get a knighthood before he got a stand but i do think a plaque of some sort would be a nice touch.

Or maybe for next year the club could commission something like a very long painting/mural that shows key moments from the clubs history over the last 100 years and he would be on that.

    Not for me really.

I think a commemorative wall or something similar should suffice. A section along the wall behind the family stand where most people have to pass would be nice.

Some large print names like Mel Nurse, Lee Trundle, Alan Curtis, etc. The Emirates Stadium has something similar, but on a larger scale. They also have a legends bar which kinda does the same thing.

The stadium by and large has two uses - football and rugby. Just because football chooses to refer to the East Stand as the Nurse stand does not mean that the Ospreys would not or could not refer to the same stand as the "blah blah blah" stand. Different use, different club, different tickets, print on them what you will and unfurl a banner or other signage on match days to identify things.

I understand the economic benefit of getting sponsors for stadiums and stands and so on but I've always thought of that as whoring out your home. For me .... The home of Arsenal has always been Arsenal Stadium at Highnury and not the Emirates. Man City plays at Eastlands not Eithiad. Some things should be sacred ... Even those most commercial bastards the New York Yankees always play at Yankee Stadium (new or old building regardless). The Liberty is The Liberty. Who can keep track - sponsors change, names change - who cares, your club plays at "home" and that home has a name for the fans not the bean counters.

While I'm on the topic .... The 32 Red logo on the front of our shirts is another thing I don't like. It's too "loud" and the club badge is lost against it and in so doing we have lost out identity. We are the Swans and nothing should appear to over shadow that.
