That we beat Sunderland on penalties at Wembley to secure Premier League status. An incredible 4-4 draw followed by a nail biting 7-6 win in the penalty shoot out. Apart from Mendonca's brilliant hat trick, no Charlton fan who was there will ever forget the 40,000 Addicks cheering on their team. My personal highlight was the reaction of the Sunderland fans on the train back to London after the game, to a man they shook our hands and said 'well done'. Worth looking at our line up again that day, for a measure of what is required to reach the Premier League, and as a stark reminder of just how far we have now fallen: Ilic Mills Rufus Youds Bowen Jones Newton Kinsella Heaney Mendonca Bright Subs: S.Jones Robinson Brown In terms of character & pride in the shirt, that line up is a million miles away from what we have to suffer now.
I remember as a youngster (well 13) the day. I held my hands over my eyes during the penalty shootout, my hands left bloodied as I'd gnawed away all of my nails and skin.
It seems like a lifetime ago that happened. Had to deal with Relgation shortly afterwards, but I felt more upbeat and confident about that, than relegations of current.
Former Charlton players I hate ...... Danny Murphy ..... for obvious reasons Mark Bright ....... I know he has strong links with the Nigel's BUT he makes no reference to the two good seasons we gave him at the end of his career... we just don't seem to exist in his mind? Pardew ..... just hate everything he stands for! I know why Scotty Parker left... and although it was disappointing at the time... it was for very good reasons and we got a good transfer fee for him. The fact that it turned out so badly for him is sad in my eyes, he should have got 50+ England caps not the odd friendlies he did accumulate
Couldn't argue with any one of those When Pardew played for us, I remember a national football journalist calling him "a Sunday league version of Ronnie Whelan" Other ex Charlton players that I hate would include just about every Meire/Fraeye signing since January 2014. I particularly loathe the foreign waste including Reza, Makienok, Sarr and Tucadean.
I hate to see a Charlton player blatantly not trying and Poyet is the most recent example. Piggybank was another.
Not sure Parker didn't go on to have a good career. He was blighted with injuries for the 3 years immediately after us which is often forgotten. He had a decent England career, but was around during the 'golden generation' as they were dubbed (ha), won a POTY in a relegated team and has built a financial security for his family for the rest of their lives.
