I don't want to be a downer. Sounds like Assam is retreating a little (which is good). However, the focus is still on profit, cost/benefit and all that. None of that should matter.
I think a lot more people would accept the idea if there was a solid reasoning for doing it. It would still feel wrong for a lot of people, myself included, but it would be better than changing it for no reason. Anyway I really doubt there'll be any proven benefit.
If Allam wants to change the name, then it would be really easy to 'prove' a benefit. What is it? A survey in China - what sounds better HULL TIGERS (with cool badge), or Hull City (in comic sans)? I really don't think it should ever come down to profit.
Since its never been tried, there's not really anything to form a solid portfolio from. Therefore, trial and error, I can still see this going ahead. To some effect anyway. So it's now confirmed its definitely about marketing. What I'm interested in from this meeting is The Doctor's exact reasoning behind it, which markets he's targeting, how he's planning on invading them, any other conquests a generic name such as Hull Tigers opens up that he could have an eye on - ie. clothing brand, sporting club etc. And if anyone went Halloween fancy dress?
If he's said: #NoToHullTigers ‏@NoToHullTigers 1m Assem Allam: "I give my word - I won't change if no benefit is proven" and he then goes on to change it without that proof he'll have lied. I don't think he'll go completely against what he has publicly said in such an obvious way that can't be denied.
You mean like when he sent your best mate Dick Thompson out on Blunderside to deny the name change mere weeks before admitting it himself? This will be judged against the success of other short snappy named companies, obviously a different market to football, where it will probably be easier to prove it works than not. Think Coca Cola, Apple, etc.
let's be honest.. the fact that fan groups got to meet with him to discuss is a big plus, look at cardiff for an instance, their owner does whatever he pleases with no consultation, allam deserves big respect for this and well done to all who attended
Yeah but he made NT look like the liar and a lot of people still believe that's the case, just like how he made Barmby look like a liar. What he hasn't done is publicly and obviously make himself look dishonest. I don't think he'd want to do that. If he compared it to Apple and other brands, it'd in no way 'prove' that re-naming a football clubs brings in money and if he's also consulting the fans as promised then he'd be made aware of that. Again it could easily be shown that he had lied and I really don't think he wants that. He's far too proud. The way I see it, he wanted to change it without consultation or proof but he hates being the bad guy so he set up this meeting and promised all these things he never wanted to, but will now have to. He'll be hoping he can prove his case but if he can't he'll have to reluctantly back down. Maybe it's wishful thinking. I'd love for all of this nonsense to just be over so we can focus on the football.
I agree the fact that he is consulting shows the campaign has had some affect, credit to him for at least meeting.
I'm focused on the football anyway. It's not as if the name changing will suddenly turn Hull City fans into a mindless cannibalistic plague spreading by the bite until 99% of the worlds population is infected and humankind is all but extinct. The same club will still be playing in the same city in the same colours on the same pitch. It's really not that much of a distraction, the players and coaching team don't appear to give a ****, it's having no negative effect.
