'Dundee, Hull, Leicester and Swansea Bay have made the shortlist to become the UK's second City of Culture in 2017.'

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22967259

**** hole of the year would be more apt. who came up with that list?

must be the first time i've seen any of those cities in question with the word 'culture' in the same sentence.

    rant over.......... ;)

Having never been to Swansea bay I can't comment but feel we should support the south Wales bid.
I have been to Hull (years ago) and I loved the place, when I say loved the place, I tolerated the place because I loved the women. When I say I loved the women I mean I sh****d a few but this is a pre_watershed post so I'll leave it to your fertile imagination. Suffice it to say can't comment on the cultural side of things with regard to Hull.
Dundee, well I drove into Dundee around 6pm on a wet Friday night 30 years ago, got pissed and drove out the following morning never to return.
Leicester, well was there a few months ago and can't say I was overly impressed.

To be fair Swansea is not that bad culturally, a few decent museums and such.

Hull is a great place to have a night out but not to sure if there are things to do daytime.

Can't comment on Dundee and have only ever been to Leicester for Football & Cricket.

Well Dundee for the uneducated is the last stop from Edinburgh on the ....wait for it Dundee line. On the said Dundee line is a train stop called Inverkeithing (Inverqueerthing) which is the nearest station to Rosyth then Naval Dockyard. So having woken up at Dundee station on more than a number of occasions after a night out in Edinburgh.. I can confirm that Dundee is a bit of a Shytehouse. That is all. I will get my coat. Plus they make cakes there.

Foregone conclusion. It's in the bag for our cousins. I've watched a lot of programs on the beeb featuring swansea lately.

I saw a good programme on the Beeb before about Cardiff too. It had some of your fans supporting England in the Euros, can't remember what it was called now

Leicester is a historic Roman City with plenty of museums and also a fairly newly developed café bar area that borders the historic area where the remains of King Richard III were recently discovered - definitely come on a lot since I left during the mid 80s!!!

I doubt any of these Cardiff fans have ever been to swansea. I've worked and have family in Cardiff and the suburbs are shocking! Where there are pockets of bad areas in Swansea most are really small unlike the majority of Cardiff

the area where i live is great, nice and leafy, great community, i admit most of cardiffs suberbs arent nice but still far better than those on the list.

Fosse, if i wanted to go to an asian city which has come on since the mid 80's i'd visit abu dhabi, not leicester........<laugh>

Is Swansea Bay the whole of Swansea? Please excuse my ignorance on this point as I haven't read the whole thing but it's a bit unfair on Swansea if they can't enter the whole town into the competition. A bit of bias so I say let's get behind Swansea Bay/Town/Borough (delete as appropriate).

S and O....don't be a mutt....the grubbier areas of Swansea are smaller coz Swansea is smaller.
However, I am with Taff on this.....Second City fo Culture for Swansea Bay, I say....and NB that probably includes Neath, Port Talbot and Pyle in the bay area.
If Liverpool and Glasgow can be European Cities of Culture, then It must be a cinch for Swansea.
PS what is it that makes port towns more cultural....maybe the rich mix of people due to the port traffic?

Pyle <yikes> - Sausageman, that's nowhere near Swansea Bay! How dare you suggest such a thing!!

In fact, along with Cornelly, it's a not so leafy suburb of the metropolis that is the Porthcawl Riviera. <ok>

It would be stretching it to say the Swansea Bay area stops at Margam, but they can have that if they want it.

It's about culture for goodness sake, every city has its own culture, what's the problem? And some of you wonder why you get short thrift in our board
