I subscribe to Sky Sports, just not for the football as my wife is a tennis nut, but that's another story. They now have Sky Sports 5, lots of football, then the usual stuff with Sky, we have the BBC, ITV, and Eurosport 1 + 2, I can go to the pub and its on, I can get football on my tablet computer my mobile phone and maybe even watch a live match, although these days I do prefer the rough and tumble of local played matches at all levels, even the girls can put on a good game, despite the muffled chuckles from men I have mentioned it to. But I now feel there is overload and what brought this about was the recent MOTD 50th Anniversary programme when it was a constant theme that this was THE programme to watch, get home to watch, or in some case not to missed simply because it the main, and in many cases the only football programme you could see on the tele. Now its seems to be everywhere it just doesn't have the same impact despite the fact there there is a never ending parade of the worlds top stars, yes I know I am one of the old gits on this forum, I can and do live with that.
Sky Sports 5 isn't increasing the amount of football on TV, it is just where all the European football previously shown on the other channels will now be shown, opening up Sky Sports 2/3/4 to show other things. Arsenal were on Sky Sports 5 the other night for the UCL for example, rather than Sky Sports 1, which showed Bradford vs Leeds in the LC.
Incidentally I haven't even mentioned the football online through streaming, updates, chat forums (not 606 is but one) and all the other peripheral stuff, overload indeed.
That is still going to appear on that one channel. It has opened up space for other sports to be shown on the other Sky channels, which is surely a good thing?
Not really Benjo in some instances its being forced upon us as when extra time is being played all other programmes are moved to make way much to the annoyance of many people I may say, including my wife.
There isn't enough, games should be played back to back, 24 hours a day, so there's always a game on.
As long as its one or two dedicated football channels OLM I agree but its all over the place at the moment.
I wrote the same thread about about a year ago and I do think there is to much, but it's supply and demand. Personally I think they should be two games on a weekend and maybe one in mid week. I remember when I was kid in 90's a live football match was event and something to look forward too. Now its just part everyday life.
If ITV and BBC had a dedicated sport channel it wouldn't matter to anyone, but they don't have enough to bother, so occasionally it interrupts Holby City (?). Sorry if that upsets anyones homelife. You know there isn't enough when you start scouring the internet hoping to find a grainy view of your local team with commentary in Arabic.
Agreed. But it's created a generation of people who have been spoon fed top level football in there front rooms and therefore don't make the effort to go to there see there local clubs. You only have look around the KC and see average age of the crowd. Hopefully our success will will reignite young peoples the passion for seeing live football.
It is because clubs charge too much money to see football. Not because they have too much football on TV. You only have to see how many young people that are obsessed with FIFA and Football Manager to know there is a massive demographic been priced out. £20-£80 to watch one football match and working on the lowest of £20 it is still around £800 a season. Not to mention traveling costs etc
There are other things streamed and other forums for other stuff, so why should that bother anyone as if you aren't interested you don't look for it? Same for TV, I download what I like and ignore what doesn't interest me. Football is overrated as a sport here, and I think it's just laziness on the part of the media towards other things, an ingrained conservative tendency. As I don't bother reading the ****ty newspapers and look for my own info it doesn't matter to me so much. The internet which you, very peculiarly, mark out as a problem is actually a means of escape from the deadly dull narrow perspective that people often have in the country they are in (and certainly what we have).
It's just to piss Virgin off moving content to Sky Sports 5 (since they get Sky Sports 1 and 2 (or did previously, don't know if that recently changed this season)).
