Is there a case to be made for Walker switching to RW?

Discussion in 'Tottenham Hotspur' started by Hoddle is a god, Jun 28, 2012.

  1. The lad gets forward at every opportunity, as it is, and he has proven that he has a pretty decent right foot, so that crossing and shooting could, with practice be improved. He already has very good ball-control, and he's pacey and strong, with a good engine.

Could he currently be our RB equivalent of where Bale was four seasons ago?

Personally, I'd love to play him and Bale at RWB and LWB respectively, in a 5-3-2 or 5-4-1 formation, alternating it with our usual 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 formations. But, I'm also thinking that whereas we have options at RB in the squad, but we don't at RW.

    Thoughts?

When Lennon was out of form or injured last season i often thought that Walker should be put at RW with Corluka at RB. I really think that could've worked and it would've meant we could keep our usual shape.
Alas, Corluka has gone and i'm not sure Naughton is solid enough yet. I'd like to keep Kaboom at centre.

I thought the same about hoping to see Walker given a go at RW. He's probably faster than Lennon so the pace aspect will scare defenders. My only worry is his crossing, it's never been too great in my eyes, not that Lennon is much better but I'd just hate to see scenarios where he's left the FB for dead and then hit the cross either too high or into the keeper.

I wouldn't play the 5-3-2 you've said though, BAE is far too good to be left out of our system. Congrats to him by the way, just won our "Best LB of the Prem era" as voted by fans on Spurs Xtra/ Twitter/ Facebook etc.

  4. I'm not saying that we should play 5-3-2 all the time, but I think we should use it as an option, especially as we have such great pace in our defence. Plus, I think some competition/rest for Benny wouldn't be a bad thing.

Oh right gotcha, sorry HIAG, thought you meant changing the system to a 5-3-2. Yeah I'd be happy to play it in order for Benny to have a rest, even though Rose has been utilised as a LB and done okay on occasions, I don't feel entirely comfortable with him filling in against top opposition, we definitely need another LB for back up/ competition unless Naughton will be kept? I know he can play both LB and RB.

I think that Rose is supposed to be going out on loan this season.
Someone like Figueroa, who's out of contract, could do a good job as back-up and competition for Assou-Ekotto for at least a season, while we see how he does.

I'm very happy with Walker continuing his progress at right-back, in all honesty.
If we were to bring in someone like Adam Johnson from City, it'd be interesting to see if Walker's attacking abilities would become more of a threat.

i think it would be a good 'option' to have...it would add a bit more urgency to our game if we are chasing...however i think an on fire Lennon is better on the wing...plus i cant see it happening for the reason that Walker needs more full back games in order to improve his positioning...which i would say is the weakest link in his game..i dont think he is good enough yet to be a wing back due to his poor reading of the game..physical attributes yes...mental..no.

but as you say HIAG..as far as options go i would have it in my locker...i like to see a player who can adapt.

Sorry, but no, he should concentrate on becoming one of the best RB's in Europe. Practice his shooting by all means, a fullback with a shot on him is a real bonus. His speed chasing back defending has rescued many situations last season, but I don't think his quick passing thats necessary for forward play is his strong point.

We could end up having Walker at RB and Adam Smith on the wing next season, presuming injuries take their toll as per usual.
