A quick question: Obviously an error of judgement on Lewis's part but given his Aunt passed away in the lead up to the GP itrs understandable that his head may have not been in the best place. Whilst Whitmarsh has been very diplomatic in his comments Jenson has been quoted as being "disappointed" in the publication of the information which as been quoted as being "Gold Dust" to the competition. So, is this information that valuable to other F1 teams? Apart from the bad PR that Lewis will likely recieve from this, has he made a serious confidentiality issue out of what was really just a bad day at the office? http://www1.skysports.com/formula-1/news/12479/8050018/Button-disappointed-by-Hamilton "We work so hard to improve the car and keep things like that secret and private," the 2009 World Champion was quoted as saying by The Guardian. "I didn't want to see it on Twitter. It was the whole telemetry from qualifying. It wasn't just the rear wing. I was very surprised and disappointed. "The bit about the time on the straights isn't the bit that's important to me. He should be gaining it back in the corners because he's got more downforce on anyway. And I was eight tenths quicker in qualifying anyway." Button added that he did not intend to speak to Hamilton about the issue: "I think it's done now. I don't think it's for me to be angry with Lewis. It's not a personal thing." Thoughts?
I cant comment as I said I wouldn't rip into any events involving Lewis for about a month out of respect of a close family member of his dying recently. I feel it would be in bad taste at this moment in time, but I will be back come October to continue the nagging! It's obvious Lewis wants to keep his mind busy by asking questions to fans, you shouldn't stop him from doing that considering what's going through his head at the moment. His head needs time to rest from moments like this and being nice to his fans who asked him nicely in the past with regards with what he is looking at etc... shouldn't be a massive deal, maybe slightly ignorant (in a young man type of way) and I agree with how Whitmarsh approached it saying it gave something away but nothing massive!
No I agree. I dont want a Lewis bashing thread - I am more interested in whether the exposure of the information is more severe than the casual race fan/observer might think?
It depends on the circuit I think, and how early on in the weekend the 'gold dust is acquired by other teams for them to analyze and counter it. But an event like Tweet-gate (copyright @ RoadRunner Industries) is effectively asking for other teams to figure out your car and giving them a clue or two when they're stuck.
Had it been before parc ferme then it probably wouldnt have been ideal. It was a mistake but we all make mistakes. Button still managed to win by miles but its still bad data to give away. Maybe Mclaren can complain that others have their data and should be punished
Paddy lowe has already confimed that the data isnt that important and teams can get hold of that info anyway. Lowe said: "The data in there isn't any great use to anyone, so I don't think there is much damage done." "The information on there is available via normal routes anyway," he said. "Most teams will have a way of finding out the information in there. The media as usual are just making a big deal of this and asking Jenson silly questions like last weekend with regards to supporting Lewis for the title.
It isn't like he went: "Lolz look at this close up of the diffuser, the inside of my cockpit and a top secret blueprint of the whole entire car." Now that would of been a crate of gold bars even for the likes of HRT.
They wouldn't have ordered him to take it down if there was no issue at all. It wouldn't have been useless but yes the other teams don't gain much from it. The real issue is simply the breach of trust on Hamiltons part.
I for one am pleased Hamilton posted the data. Everyone seems to have conveniently ignored the content of the telemetry data Hamilton posted. His car was clearly slower than Buttons on the straights, but not significantly faster on the twisty parts of the track to make up the loss of time, this is why he posted the image to show the world how illogical his higher downforce setup was. this makes me believe that he did not want to run the higher downforce setup, but was told it would be better than running the new wing. whereas jenson was told something different, behind lewis's back. this is why lewis was so frustrated, and this is why he posted what he posted.he was letting us know the telemetry wasnt what he was told it was, hense the suprise by it by saying WTF.it means they cant do him like that again in the future, itll make ppl too suspicious.
I'm sorry but I don't buy this. Setting up the car is an iterative process that the driver should be heavily involved in, their feedback dictates what the engineers do. The engineers don't just set up a car and give it the driver. Obviously free practice was heavily affected by rain and Lewis and his team got it wrong, Jenson and his team got it right. I doubt very much there was any intent behind Lewis' poor setup choice, I am certain McLaren would want both cars to do well. In my opinion Lewis should have taken comfort from the knowledge that there was a specific reason as to why Jenson was so much quicker and left it at that. Perhaps, if he felt the need explain to the media that he and his team got the setup wrong, certainly no more. I'm not massively versed in all technical aspects of F1, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I personally don't think that much valuable technical data was given away. Teams put a lot of effort into figuring out what others are doing. I suspect the telemetry didn't tell them much that they didn't already know. But there is more to this whole incident than just data; It's shown weakness on Lewis's part, its shown he's a little insecure and I'm sure rival teams have jumped on that and attempted to exploit the situation. I believe it will also embolden Jenson he knows that he can get under Lewis's skin very easily. It's also damaged the trust between him and his team, which unless dealt with effectively could mean the whole relationship could begin to unravel.
I can't see what anyone could have gained. I thought all it showed was where Hamilton was losing time to Button???? How could any non McLaren team gain from that - especially with their own set ups locked in place by then?
The Telementries show how drivers take corners to good times dont they? Probably didnt look at Hamilton but Buttons. A driver could look at it and say ok they didnt let off so much on that corner etc. Or am I wrong?
It's been blown out of proportion as per usual with LH. I've seen people who still think the crash was his fault. I don't understand the irrational hatred for the guy. I think LH as acted very professional this year. All the errors from Maclaren throughout the year and he has kept his mouth shut. He makes one mistake and all hell breaks lose. It's trully pathetic in my opinion. On the other hand Button moans over the radio about the set up of car constantly and no one bats an eye lid. I like both drivers but the media and some fans treat them differently. Ie, choc ice up there is an obvious racist. It's a shame because I assume he lives 200 miles from Manchester. Haters will be haters.
For me the Lewis Hamilton bashing has become like the BBC+Sky with talking about nothing but the deficit and how much debt we as a country are... it's ****ing boring!
I'm a huge Hamilton fan, he reignited my passion for F1 after the dark Schumacher dominated years. But that said I'm not surprised a big deal has been made of this, has anything like this ever happened before? i.e an F1 driver potentially giving away team secrets in an attempt to justify why he was slower than his team mate? I think more emphasis has been placed on this than might have been because of his contractual situation and because of last year.
I not quite sure of these terms "team secrets" and "sensative techincal data" that keep going around. It looks like me to be merely a detailed lap time for both drivers that all the teams can work out for themselves anyway. ITs definately a bigger issue than If Rosberg or someone had done it.
