Experienced, English Premier League centre-midfielder signed in January in an effort to add leadership to a squad facing relegation, however he fails to make any meaningful impact in his first season and we go down regardless. Stays on board in the Championship despite probably being able to force a move if he wanted to, ups his game dramatically, and becomes a natural leader on the pitch as well as a reliable source of goals (this bit still pending, but looking promising...) driving us back towards the Premier League in emphatic fashion!
I'd say he's more of a poor man's Gerrard. Nolan seemed to play a lot further up the pitch. I like what I see with Shelvey this year. Rafa seems to have gotten into his head. It helps that Hayden does a lot of the spade work for him too.
I would like to think so... There always was a great footballer lurking in there lets hope he keeps it up.
Ah didn't really think of that, and thought we might be missing the Nolan figure, but you may have a point! Shelvey's never really been a consistent goal scorer though, 6 is the most he's had in a season, can see him stepping that up here though. Nice to see we're getting goals from all over the park this season - 6 games played and already 11 different scorers.
Shelvey will go off the boil from time to time, but the point now is that he knows he will be replaced without mercy in the starting line-up if that happens.
Get the feeling that Shelvey is a real "confidence" player - think the state of the team/club last reason really affected him. Definitely on the up now
He's only 24 so a lot of time to improve, has the talent to do so and could be better than Gerrard if he works at it, I think he has been badly let down by his own attitude at times.
Very different players for me. I don't think Shelvey will ever lead. I don't think he will ever be a reliable source of goals. However the circumstances have similarities. I'm just impressed he has actually spent his summer getting fit with a personal trainer and taken on board his managers words of wisdom. He gassed at 60mins of every game last year, joke for a pro.
wtf!! I like the lad and hope he continues to do well but no he will not be better than Gerrard or even in the same category of player. When Gerrard was the age Shelvey is now he was captaining his club to a Champions League final victory in which he bossed the second half. Shelvey is a long, long way from that. He's a mid-table Premiership player if he can show consistency, more Charlie Adam than Gerrard.
I had always rated him, until a few weeks after he joined us. McClaren might have got into his head and ruined his game. He's up for it now so I expect a motivated player this season. Goals wise, he might get into double figures easily. He'll never be a Gerrard, but half a Gerrard would be pretty amazing in the middle of the park.
In the last couple of games he looks: *Sharper *more relaxed *full of confidence *Fitter *More vocal. He looks like he is actually trying to play and win games, I think rafa has said to him.... look son you have it, you just need to give 100% each game..... I think he is having a "i get it moment" right now and the more we support him.... i think the more he will produce!
Thinking about Tuesday's game, it occurred to me that Shelvey's reigning his flamboyant passing in a bit this season; when we first signed him it was 60 yard passes every time he got the ball, when they came off it was spectacular, when they didn't he looked like a total knob. Looks like Rafa's talked to him and told him to be more of a team player, which he looks much more of this season.
and getting paid 80K a year, no wonder he stayed with you, no other clubs would pay that wage for him
