When I think of some of the players who have been selected, I'm tempted to say Yes. But, being sensible, No. He needs to be playing & scoring regularly before he could be considered a serious possibility
If he starts getting more premier league games and keeps scoring he should be a regular starter for England by the time of the Euros if he plays well in the Euro U21 finals next summer. If he was a Liverpool player he would be a regular now of course!
Well he's getting more minutes than Lambert and he's certainly got the ability to be in consideration for the squad. But no, I don't think he should be selected, he's 21 and there's no rush. Let these young players enjoy their football at their clubs and for their age group at international level, no need to push them into the team early just for the sake of giving the fans a new player to overhype and then knock when things don't go well. I'd rather none of these young players, with the exception of Sterling, were getting picked in the England senior squad. Infact, look at Sterling now, he's a talented player in great form yet he's having to deal with being in the middle of a load of bullshit posturing between the club and country managers. I think we'd be far better off with these players getting 40 odd caps when they're more experienced, playing regularly and closer to their peak than trying to create another "golden generation" of international flops with 100+ caps.
Is he better than Rooney, Sturridge, or Welleck? No, clearly not. Please, everyone, let's not get carried away. He had a great game against that Greek side, I'm not taking that away from him. But when he (and the rest of the team) can do that against the likes of WBA, let alone Arsenal or £ity, then I'll allow myself to become optimistic about his chances. Having said that, I'd take him over either Ade or LOLdado any day of the week, although that isn't saying very much, as they are two of the worst "strikers" in any league, any where in the world.
Being good enough for the England squad is the dictionary definition of the phrase "Damning with faint praise."
Let him stay in the U21s until after the tournament in the summer and if the group do well there then phase them into the full side when its appropriate, if they're good enough. He should be starting for us though no question IMO.
My thoughts exactly. 20 years ago you'd need to have been a 20 goal a season top flight player for 2-3 years to get a look in - unless you were Steve Bull, but 50 goals in a season was exceptional. Now a player with half a dozen first team games for his club is touted as an England prospect. No reflection on the player, just the lack of quality players available for England.
Yes, Kane is beginning to prove he's got the class to not just score goals, but to bring that "X" factor to the side. We look so much better when he's playing. Plus, you can see that he's growing in confidence with every 90 minutes he gets under his belt. Long may it continue.
When people on this forum were knocking Harry Kane and saying that he'd never make it, I tried to point out that he has succeeded at every level he has played and given time he will succeed in the Premiership. I fully believe the he will go on to be a regular fixture in the England team. However, as others have pointed out on this thread, it would be good for him to finish his under 21 commitments before graduating to the full England squad. His game has come on leaps and bounds under Poch and his confidence is running high. The under 21's is probably a tad below his level now but if he continues scoring for them it will do his confidence no harm at all. Kane displays attributes akin to Matt Le Tissier (but works harder) and Teddy Sherringham (but is quicker). He has a good footballing brain. Providing the likes of Real Madrid don't come sniffing I see him having a long and distinguished career with both Tottenham and England.
I'd still leave him in the U21s for now with Berahino and give a chance to some of the others pushing for a place. Austin and Ings have looked good recently, though I think the latter still qualifies for the U21s, too. Kane, Berahino and Ings for Southgate's squad in the summer?
The real question is whether the England squad are good enough for Kane. Does he have any German or Spanish grandparents we should know about?
