The criticism that PJ has given Lee Martin for that tackle on Saturday is way over the top and reminds me of the Keane era when he used to lambast his players in public. Sending Martin off to train with the reserves and not speaking to him is surely just a back lash and will do nothing for the lads fragile confidence! At least he made a tackle which and I suspect most of the neutrals will consider very harsh to receive a red card. He went in square on and clearly got the ball. Yes Martin has been sent off but at least he made an effort unlike most of those useless lazy bastards on Saturday. Are you watching Leadbitter? I am beginning to think that PJ is losing the plot. To single out Lee Martin is just plain wrong and goes against what he's been saying about the lack of tackles!
In the same interview on that BBC match report - he says his players let the opposition walk through them and he slams Martin for the tackle. Plot lost. I didn't even need to read your article JWM the headline summed it up. Neither manager started out like it so that leads me to believe it's pressure from on high when things start going wrong.
Its not right to blame one player for a teams loss, Although it seems that lately T.Smith and/or Leadbetter seem to get the lions share of the blame on here????
i dont think you can compare that tackle to a show of effort. PJ is right, he is out for 3 games and its not the first time Jewell has mentioned this side of Martin's game. If he keeps repeating those mistakes he's got to learn the hard way.
Lee Martin used to give away stupid free kicks and get loads of yellow cards at charlton. he has a massive Gob and paul jewell is absolutely right
Felt a bit harsh at the time, I think mainly because we were feeling so sorry for ourselves at that point anything felt unfair. Got the ball but went right through the player necessarily, could have just stood him up on the line. Sonko may do a job as cover for now, we need pace in defence though. The second goal I think was a straight ball that went past about 7 players and took about 10 seconds before there lad ran on to it and bagged. Quite unbelievable scenes, Jeff. Midfield is non-existent, the amount of times the midfielders charged towards one of their players recklessly only to be swiftly side stepped or about 4 minutes too late was incredible. No footballing brains in the squad!
It appears a very Roy Keane reaction and seems a little harsh, although when looking back at his disciplinary record it is terrible especially for a winger who doesn't really get stuck in. I just hope Martin proves himself as he has looked like a decent winger of late and that Jewell does not have another of Keanes traits in that he doesn't bare a grudge. Yes smith and Leadbitter seem to be getting the majority of the flack, I can't believe how lightly Delaney is getting off!!!
Nobody learns from unpunished actions. This will be a good test of Martins character, is he the type to now sulk, put in no effort and put in a transfer request or will he knuckle down, man up and show the boss that he can learn from his mistakes. It can work two ways when you treat someone this way, we'll have to wait and see how this one turns out. Jewell must be livid with what he saw saturday and I think he is trying to make sure this never happens again. Whether he is going about things the right way remains to be seen.
Is this public slating of players really necessary/good for morale? He slated Carson the other day and now Martin, pressure is getting to him me thinks and rightly so!!
If Jewell was Keane then Leadbitter would never be seen on a football pitch again with RK's one mistake and your out policy so it wouldnt be a bad thing! I dont know if I would have gone as far as Jewell but I have some sympathy for him. Its always the manager that gets sacked due to a teams poor performance yet they can only do so much. He has been saying for weeks that certain players are not listening to their pre match instructions and as a result we have been conceding sloppy goals. I assume one of these is Martin. On Saturday he failed to track the runner on several occasions. One of which led to a goal, another a near miss and then he puts in a potentially dangerous, unneccasary tackle due to loosing his cool. Should Jewell just be happy with this? Is he sending out a warning to the rest of the team? and lets not forget Keane also had issues with Martin so maybe it is also an attitude/ arrogance issue. Regardless of whether Jewell over reacted with his comments if the players cant be bothered to put in the effort then why should they be near the team?
Martin does have to cut this side of his game out, that said i thought saturdays sending off was harsh as he did take the ball. It certainly did not influence the result as we were 4-1 down by then. That was the single most inept game i have ever seen ITFC play. I am still embarressed about it.
That's interesting Jem cos on your other thread you said you've never seen Andrews play. I would love to know how you managed to watch the Posh game without seeing him play?
Lol - Calm down Ironside. I only saw the highlights as i was not at the game.It looked the most inept dispaly i have ever seen. Now for your thoughts on Andrews.....
