I see from this mornings gossip columns that Jonjo Shelvey is nearing eligibility to play for Scotland. Apparently his Granny had a piece of shortbread in 1963 and knows how to spell "haggis". Sorry mate, much as I miss you at the Valley and despite the fact that on the basis of talent you would walk into to the current fiasco of a team, you are about as Scottish as the pink pig that just flew past. Is it just me or has the credibility of international football disappeared?

Would you be upset if I got Shelvey on the back of my Scotland shirt? ;) <cheers>

Was his Gran Scottish? I haven't seen this story today.

Sorry Jimbob, Maik Taylor, Northern Ireland international, has already won that prize. <ok>

Have a look at his 'eligibility'... and that crowd are always crowing about Republic of Ireland players <laugh>

As AllHell posted in the "Who am I thread":
The answer, of course, was John Hewie. At least he looked Scottish. Would have been a great extra in "Braveheart".

I think I started the trend for "British" players, capped for Italy on the strength on my Italian grandfather, but many South American born players played for Italy before WWII so if the plot is lost, it happened a long time ago.

I can understand players of modest talent grabbing the chance of a cap from a minor footballing nation (like Scotland) but I would have thought that Selvey has a realistic chance of an England career if we have to resort to the likes of Jordan Henderson in the Euro Finals. Shelvey is already preferred for Liverpool.

I was browsing CL (boo! hiss!) the other day and his Uncle has already rubbished the reports.

I would find it very peculiar if he decided to play for Scotland, not just because he's about as scottish as a Chicken Tikka*, but because he turned down the offer to play for Ireland in World Cup 2010 (even though they didn't eventually qualify).

*contrary to popular belief, Chicken Tikka Masala did not in fact originate in Scotland ;)

The mystery to me is why he hasn't been assured by Psycho that he's in England's future plans at U-21 level at least - that'd put paid to this nonsense very quickly.

On the other hand, so would have his inclusion in the Team GB squad for the Olympics.

I'm sure Henderson will come good in due course, but Shelvey's there now, and would have been some time ago if Dalglish had an ounce of flair in his body.

With this statement there's only one person round here who has lost the plot...!!

Yes he would get in our team, but fiasco... really...? Believe me, I've seen more than my fair share of Charlton sides that warrant the description 'fiasco' and this side is certainly not one of them...!!

    My sincerest apologies Ybab...!! <doh>

In reference to Scotland the term 'Fiasco' is more than fair. In fact, 'Shambolic Fiasco' is more accurate... :emoticon-0102-bigsm

If I had Jockish relatives, I would end it all.

If I were a footballer, I would wait for the reformation of Wessex. My heart belongs to the one true state.

I do love Scotland as a place, though. Melrose is a truly wonderful place.

Was there ever a West Anglia? We had Middle Anglia and have retained East Anglia.

On topic - I think it depends on how passionate JJ would feel about playing for Scotland. If he had close relations to his nan and her families heritage, always feeling close to the country and would relish wearing the Scottish badge, then why not?
