I know a lot of you come to the defence of referees but the high level of incompetence we have witnessed recently has cost us very dearly.

Should people who are incompetent be permitted to continuing practicing?

Problem is now - if refs got sacked for incompetence, there wouldn't be any left!!

It will be interesting to see if Friend (and Atkinson) gets dropped for the next round of PL games. It's the closest thing you'll get to the PL publically admitting that one of their referee's has failed to do his job properly.

You win some, you lose some. No point in moaning. Nothing involving human beings will ever be totally right. I suggest people knocking refs should take the opportunity to train and start helping out in the Sunday leagues....I'm sure they'll be glad of some perfect refs.

Sorry to be ever so slightly sexist Fran but reading - no point in moaning from a lady made me chuckle.

I'm with Fran on this one, yes i'm frustrated that we didn't get a penalty, but we have had soft ones given for us and stonewall penalties not given against us this season. These decisions are not retrospective so the best way is just to forget them and move on (for the sake of your own sanity!).

Football does slowly learn from other sports like rugby union; we all want the right decisions being made at critical moments; hopefully we will see video being used soon, we have goal line technology and its a logical extension to use it elsewhere in the game. There are too many mistakes being made, not helped by players conning refs.

The problem is that players cheat all the time and they are getting better at it. As much as I'd like to blame refs, I really can't (not all the time anyway).

The game is faster than it ever was and players now reckon that if they "feel" a touch they have a right to fall over and demand a free kick. The real problem is that referees haven't completely decided whether they agree with them or whether they don't. So in some games you see 'soft' penalties e.g. Spurs today and in others the refs feel they want to see blood and broken limbs before giving a penalty e.g. Saints today.

So, the players must take some of the blame but I would like to see more consistency from referees.

Finally, there should be more use of technology. The 'handball' today could have been ruled on within seconds by reviewing the video, it was a factual decision. The penalties are a bit harder as they were obviously seen by the ref but were deemed to be 'dives' (where was the booking for diving by the way?).

The one REALLY bad decision was the non-foul on Clyne when the ball was well gone and he was taken out on the right wing. If we are talking bad refereeing that was it.

It would be very simple to have a TV official. That official would sit away from the game and be given access to the feeds from all cameras (maybe you give them a tech-savvy assistant who can quickly bring up footage from particular cameras) and would be able to contact the referee quickly. The TV official has, I don't know, something like five to ten seconds to review any contentious incidents and if necessary pull the game back via the referee on the pitch.

Would that system be perfect? No, but it should deal with howlers and would definitely be better than what we have now.

Lff said the game is getting faster. True. So the referees need to get faster. Not fair? Then we need a referee in each half.

I dont usually moan about the refs but today was beyond woeful. Most of us have a level of understanding that there will be errors but this was well beyond tolerable and the ref (and his linesmen) should be punished.

IMO the lack of decent refs is purely down to the FA and their lack of power within the game they allegedly govern.

As a former referee, I hate knocking refs without reason and can't stand to listen to people bleat on thinking they know best when they haven't got the minerals to get up and give it a go themselves.

However, it seems that the standard of reffing in the PL is declining generally. The PGMOL as a body quite rightly should be independent, but it's guidance should only come from the FA who should be at the forefront of making standards of refereeing better for the Premier League. Sadly as all too often with the FA, I see nothing in terms of incentives for referee recruitment, nothing in terms of making refs more accountable for their performances and nothing crucially to help referees get decisions right more often.

As far as I saw today, there was a ref who bottled 2 pretty clear cut decisions in terms of penalties (1 each) and needed help for 2 big decisions from his assistants and got nothing from either. As all of the reports on performance of refs is private, we'll only know if it was bad if he gets dropped but by then, nothing will really happen as the PGMOL haven't got enough refs to drop one for long periods.

With so much money in the game, the situation is quite bizarre and sad in equal measures.

To answer the question, incompetence should be addressed, acted on and prevented... Only in the Bermuda Triangle of PL football is it allowed so readily.

I think Duricic **** himself in the foot a little. After diving for the first one, the ref was less likely to give the second. Still, if he was Harry Kane he would have got it. It's the inconsistency which is frustrating.
