I wasnt there on Saturday. Is Connor Wickham as good as he is made out then? Or is it another media frenzy over a mediocre player?
He's only 17, but he certainly doesn't look it on the pitch, I'd say it's likely that he'll go for big money and he'll probably earn it.
Looks like a solid prospect imo. Considering he's only 17 and he's been in an around the team for around a year sums him up. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't go for big money in the next few years, he looks like he could maybe justify a big price tag of around ã10mill
I was going to disagree on the basis of Suarez going for just over ã20M, then I remembered who he's going to be playing up front with.
I think if Carrolls worth ã35mill then Wickhams worths around ten. And I did say in the next few years where he'll undoubtably get better
Like I say (which bastard put on that Swanny says that all the time, it's got me going now), I was going to disagree before I remembered who Suarez was going to be playing with.
I think Wickham's probably better value at ã10m, than Carroll is at ã35m. Though I'm still not sure I understand exactly why either of them are worth anything like that much, they're only footballers ffs.
The depressing thing is the hype surrounding most things these days. Wickham is a good footballer and at 17 will surely get better. The media surrounding football is awful. I can't read Four Four Two anymore because it is just so sycophantic, in fact most of the media is suffed full of superlatives. Why can't commentators just say things like: "a square ball from Harper to Koren" or "Belaid nutmegs the defender" or "Simpson loops a header into the top corner"? I'd even be happy with radio commentary to go back to the old fashioned "Barmby plays the ball to Koren in square 3 "......
11 goals in 58 games - I know he can't be judged on goalscoring just yet but that isn't all that good. Seems as though he's been around for a long while. Scored twice in a League Cup game last season and that's when his publicity escalated, apparently Ipswich have had bids in excess of ã10m both in Summer and in the January window. We'll see how he develops
Didn't read the full article but I saw today that "Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal battle for ã15million Wickham". Guess we just have to accept that players sell for silly money now. I think the Darren Bent to Tottenham deal a few years back saw to it that English players are worth their weight in gold... even if they're not!
Bent went to Spurs for ã16m - in the same transfer window, a 29 year old Thierry Henry went to Barca for the same amount....
thats exactly my point. at that point in time i don't think you could really compare the two other than that they played in the same position. he has somewhat justified his hefty price tags more recently, but back then? no chance.
all i remember him doing was slicing a volley from 6 yards wide, if hes worth 10 million i reckon stewart will go for 40m one day..
What about Oxlade-Chamberlain at Southampton? What would you value him at in the current market (relative to what Arsenal were supposedly going to pay)?
Don't even know what position he is to be honest. If he's a forward I'd be comparing him to Lita, if he's a midfielder I'd be inclined to go for comparing him to Delph if I was being kind, and Stuart Green if I wasn't. Whatever it is the money being spoken about for him is ridiculous, it doesn't matter how good you look at that level it's a gamble even coming up to Championship level so to be going for the same money as Liverpool signed Xabi Alonso for is just stupid. Even if it works out it doesn't make you right to have taken the gamble.
