    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...tor-targeted-by-Borussia-Monchengladbach.html

Borussia Monchengladbach, Manchester City’s Champions League Group D rivals, are attempting to persuade Sunderland sporting director Lee Congerton to take up the same role with the Bundesliga outfit.

Congerton, who has been in his current position on Wearside since March 2014, arrived at the Stadium of Light having worked as technical director in Germany with SV Hamburg.

But with Monchengladbach currently rooted to the foot of the Bundesliga after losing all four games so far this season, club president Rainer Bonhof had identified Congerton as his preferred candidate to overhaul the club’s scouting and player recruitment system.

Despite Congerton’s struggle to secure top quality players to Sunderland while working with manager Dick Advocaat and his predecessor, Gus Poyet, the 42-year-old retains a strong reputation in Germany following his work at Hamburg alongside Frank Arnesen, the former Chelsea technical director.

Congerton, who was appointed chief scout at Chelsea by Arnesen before following the Dane to Hamburg, became fluent in German during his time in the Bundesliga and he has since rejected offers from Schalke and Hanover to return to the country.

With Congerton close to Monchengladbach president Bonhof, however, following the former Germany midfielder’s two-year stint as Chelsea’s scout in Austria and Germany, a move back to the Bundesliga is understood to appeal.

Monchengladbach, beaten by Liverpool in the 1977 European Cup final, secured a return to Europe’s premier club competition by finishing third in the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg last season.

Having won five German titles and two Uefa Cups during the 1970s, Monchengladbach are determined to restore the club’s glory days, with Bonhof identifying Congerton as a key factor in attempts to rebuild the the structure at Borussia-Park.

I will be gutted if this comes off. I think he's really underrated and together with DA could give us a team to be well proud of.

"Despite Congerton’s struggle to secure top quality players to Sunderland"? That's not what all of us have been saying this week! He might have struggled with Poyet, but this summer's signings with Advocaat are starting to look pretty decent. I think he'll stick with the EPL money myself.

I'd happily advocate giving him a new deal to get him to stay on should we have an ok season. Job's not done yet.

I'm sold on the DoF model and think it's only a matter of time before everyone follows suit. I think he's done a very good job in difficult circumstances.

Hope he stays to see the job through, I recon two more windows and we will be turned round and he could then take his pick if he wants to move on.

He's doing well and struck a good relationship with Dick. It's important we keep him.
