I can see this one coming off, as it's constantly talked about. And as one of the forwards, for the price, may make decent business. Sunerland boss Steve Bruce aims to make *relegated duo DJ Campbell and Seb Larsson his first captures of the summer. Bruce will step up his *interest in Blackpool *striker Campbell and Birmingham winger *Larsson, who is available on a Bosman, this week. But the Black Cats boss will face fierce competition for Campbell, 29, who scored 13 goals last term. Bruce, who signed him as Birmingham boss from Brentford for £500,000 in 2006, has been alerted by the fact that the striker has a £1million buy-out clause in his contract.
It's obvious that Short has requested we get some cheaper players in before the big bucks is spent. I think Campbell will be a decent squad player as we try to push forward. He won't cost a fortune is either transfer or wages, plus Bruce knows the guy, so hopefully, if it comes off, it will work out well.
when i first saw the title my first thought was ****ttttttttttttttt not sol campbell, **** THAT! /relief getting up at 4am to watch the champ league final two days after 40+ hours travelling = has my brain not at 100%
funny how we all see things in differing ways, I dont think its anything to do with Short. We need 2 strikers, more like 3 and we not going to spend 10 mil plus on each one. We need 2 squad players who can come in and offer a plan b, Campbell would be ideal to me along with a Doyle or Boothroyd. One big signing will be first choice with Gyan.
what he said. Bruce looks to be bulking out the squad a little with minimal expenditure, which can only be a good thing if he gets players in who are capable of doing a job when called upon. With maybe 2 or 3 players that are marque signings. The squads as thin as piss so no complaints from me.
Campbell would be an okay signing didn't realise he was that old though which could be the stumbling block as his resale value will be zip unless he scores about 30 plus goals next season.
but £1 million for a player who scored more than gyan, must be seen as a bargain, still got a few years left in him.
Fair one mate again it'll come down to playing regularly and I think that Bruce has a striking plan of Gyan plus a big signing as his first choice. Campbell would be a good squad player not sure he'd play that much though, although given our injury record he'll be on from match 2.
think bruce is bulking up squad with cambell, larson, vaughen etc needs to be done so no excuses for bruce if season fade away like last two seasons
That's the worrying part for me, Gyan is decent but i'm not convinced that the team should be built to cater for his needs solely. Trying to find strikers to compliment him. Syd did a thread a few days back, about who you would keep from the squad, and i didn't include Gyan as one of my choices, that's not to say i want him to go, but i don't think he is the be-all in the team. I'd be more gutted if henderson or sess were to go.
Agree, Gyan is the star striker though at 13mil so Bruce will probably build round him. Don't think we've seen the best of Gyan just yet hope not anyway.
DJ Campbell wouldn't be a disaster in my eyes. At 29, he's in the peak of his career, scored a few goals this season and has a huge physical presence as well. We have missed that and for £1m he is 6 times less expensive than KJ was and IMO, a better target man. If he was a 3rd/4th striker behind Gyan and Pavlyuchenko or Crouch then yes please.
