    move for Spurs keeper Gomes

Last updated at 6:38 AM on 18th January 2012
New QPR manager Mark Hughes has set his sights on Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.
The 30-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane following the arrival of Brad Friedel in the summer.
Out of favour: Tottenham keeper Heurelho Gomes.
Gomes, who joined Spurs for £7million from PSV Eindhoven in 2008, is now third choice behind Friedel and Carlo Cudicini, reports the Daily Mirror.

Hughes has a long list of transfer targets as he seeks to guide QPR away from the drop zone in the Premier League.
He is also trying to bring in a new centre-half with Chelsea’s Alex and Blackburn stopper Chris Samba on the radar.
And Rangers have also been linked with Fulham striker Andy Johnson and Aston Villa's Darren Bent

i would have thought most of our problems were at the other end of the pitch

We were linked to Ben Foster, which would be a good addition. But how the eff could anybody consider Gomes to be better than Kenny? I mean, blimey, Gomes has been displaced in the Spurms team by Friedel and he's, like, 78 years old or something.

I think Paddy is pretty solid and an excellent shot-stopper. He's not done a lot wrong in the PL to date, except that he needs to bend more at the knees when he's picking the ball out of the net, else he'll strain his back.

MH has the problem of trying to address our immediate needs and also trying to build for the future. Our immediate needs are obvious to all but i am sure that even with our Jan purchases he will try and start to slowly lower our age profile. He has to be careful of spending large sums on older players who will have little or no resale value at the end of a 2-3 year contract. Another problem he faces now in Jan, is that limited players are actually available and lets be honest here, they are normally players that nobody (or very few) want.
In building for the future he has to ensure that players have sufficent quality even at a young age. Onoucha and this young Henrique seem to fit into this category.

The Gomes link therefore puzzles me. He does not fit into "buying for the future category" and would IMHO be a player who would not greatly improve what we already have. IMHO i think this will be Paddys last season with us. Yes i agree he is a good shot stopper (but so are most decent goalies) but he does not command his area like a top class keeper could. He is also prone to flapping at crosses and i think that is beacuse he is physically not big enough. I think MH will target a new keeper for next year.

I agree whole heartedly with this, Kenny is a good stopper but does not command his box enough and his distribution is close to dreadful, watch his kicking closely , very rarely strike a ball cleanly.

Habve to say i think Gomes is a better keeper , is it priority now, maybe not , we have bigger issues.

Agree NUTS and w9. Kenny are massively overrated among the QPR supporters. It's any teams most important position and we should look to strengthen in this department as well. Unfortunately for us we have more pressing matters at the moment. But if Sparky could manage to bring in a new keeper while he's at it bringing in 4-5 outfield players it would do us the world of good.

PLUS.... we're being linked with every frigging player out there. This (Daily Mail) story doesn't name or quote any sources, so it's as reliable as a Cerny 'ITK' prediction - that is, it's basically Mystic Meg having a guess and making a career out of telling people. And if she was so good, how come SHE never won the lottery?

Kenny is a good goalie, one of the best we have had at QPR since Dave Seaman. Do not want Gomes, whenever I have seen him play he struggles to even catch a cold. Foster is a good shout, but put a solid decent reliable defence in front of Kenny and we may get more out of him.

Agree. As we also have a good though ageing reserve in Cerny, it's perhaps a bigger priority in the summer.

Yep. Kennys a good Championship keeper but not a prem player in my eyes.

Would rather have a Gomez, Foster or Kusczack in between the sticks, and Kenny as a back-up.

I would be interested to know on what basis you have formed your opinion. I am no expert (clearly!) but wouldn't necessarily say Kenny is any less a goalkeeper than at least half a dozen other 'keepers in the PL. Is it because he hasn't been a PL goalie for many seasons?

Gomes is a much better keeper than kenny is, would be a welcomed addition.

Not a priority at this stage for me, although it depends what Neil does next as Paddy might be interested in following him again.

I think it would be good to add more quality in every department but as you say there are other areas in more urgent need.

I like kenny, great shot stopper and a great character, but a massive part of being a top keeper is the ability to come and take a cross, even against the likes of samba. Paddy can't do this cos he ain't big enough and pressure builds and goals are scored because of it.

Kenny was partly at fault for the Newcastle goal and Ive not really been convinced by him, I think a crippled Cerny has played better this season.

I would love a commanding keeper who dominates the area.

I agree totally with this , niether of our keepers comes for crosses and we suffer cos of that. Great shot stoppers but distribution and crosses are woeful. In todays game a lot of attacks start with the keeper getting the ball and playing it out fast and accurately , we do not get this dynamic. In the CCC you can get away with this , in the prem it is high lighted.

A quality goal keeper is worth at least double figures points wise over the course of a season. So still a priority in my eyes IF the right type of player becomes available.

Kusczyk has experience in the prem and champs league and is also out of contract in the summer. Surprised we arent linked with him tbh.
