I read the following article & was wondering given Sunderland’s close association to Ireland whether or not anyone would like to see the game arranged.

The reason for asking is that when England are playing, most seem not to care to for various reasons.

Could the so called fans be trusted not to riot, dislike of Capello & certain players or the poor results by them over a number of years etc be put behind for this occasion & an England v Ireland match be embraced or has too much water passed under his bridge to be interested.

Republic of Ireland keen to arrange England friendly

    Sunday, 13 November 2011

The Republic of Ireland want to arrange a friendly against England - the first meeting since crowd trouble caused the abandonment of a game 16 years ago.

The game at Dublin's Lansdowne Road in 1995 was abandoned after 27 minutes.

The Republic lead 4-0 after their Euro 2012 first-leg play-off against Estonia and are keen to face high-profile teams before their likely finals appearance.

It is not yet certain if the match will be agreed before the draw for the finals is made on 2 December.

Football Association of Ireland (FAI) chief executive John Delaney told the Sunday Independent: "I think there is a real enthusiasm, particularly from the English FA, to have England in Dublin sooner rather than later."

Republic assistant manager Marco Tardelli was more focused on securing a place in the finals before considering the build-up to the event, which takes place in Poland and the Ukraine from 8 June to 1 July.

"For us, all teams are the same. I think in Europe, there are many strong teams," the Italian said.

"For us, if we play against Italy or England, it's no problem because we must play these games. The teams are not important, it is important to qualify."

England could also be Sweden's first opponents in their new national stadium when it opens next year in Stockholm.

The proposed friendly at the new 50,000-capacity arena is scheduled for November 2012.

It is understood that the fixture has been agreed as part of a reciprocal arrangement which brings Sweden to Wembley on Tuesday.

England also played the first match in Sweden's current national stadium, the Rasunda, in May 1937.

England won that game 4-0 but have not beaten Sweden in 12 games dating back to 1968.

    This *shudder*

I'd say it would be good for cross-community relations though...The republicans and loyalists may hate each other, but I'm fairly sure they hate the English more!

It would certainly have the potential for trouble, and for the sake of a friendly I think should not go ahead...

Bring back the home internationals, otherwise I couldn't give a **** marra.

Even if they did bring them back, ROI wouldn't be invited as they are just another foreign country to me.

    Northern Ireland yes. Republic no.

    **** them.

I despise international football now, what a load of crud.

    Oh are you Mr. Christ?

I was in Belfast for the England v N Ireland game a few years back when we got beat 1-0.

I was with some Scottish friends. The Ulster lads took the piss something rotten but it was all good natured banter & no one took offence.

How much time do you spend over there?

When I was younger they used to play each other regularly & some great matches resulted.

Now days it seems every odd month has a "friendly" played somewhere between countries only looking at the money as a "whoever pays the most" gets a game.

I know that before the last WC Scotland asked to visit NZ but they wanted hundreds of thousands in match fees which for a small nation on the other side of the world, it was never going to be an option.

With players these days appearing only to be motivated about "how much is in it for me" type attitudes I thought the idea of rekindling old rivalries, if safe, might be a way forward?

Kiwi, you are my friend & I will put this as simple as I can as I agree with everything you say.

Any player who even wants paying for playing for his country deserves to be ****ed up the arse by a load of big cocked **** stabbers.

    That's my feelings on it.

I agree 100% with you Billy. You know me well & the selfish F*** Wits don't appreciate how blessed a life they're able to live with the money that's in the game. Life's friggin tough most of the time with issues along the way that make you tougher for them & if fortune allows one to keep a glass half full attitude.
    I’m an old romantic, that’s my problem:angel:

Wrong Ireland. There aren't many loyalists in Dublin.

Seem to remember, there was a fair amount of Sunderland/Newcastle lads involved in this trouble..

But if it could go ahead, could be a canny game.

I'm in Belfast for the majority of the year as I'm currently studying for an MA at Queens (its my 4th year here now). I live in a fairly republican area called The Holy Lands (its student housing but because its on the edge of the very Republican Ormeau Road, you don't get many Protestants living here).

The Northern Ireland fan base are predominantly Protestant, with the Catholics generally supporting ROI instead and therefore would be more sympathetic towards England, I don't think many would support them - and as I am constantly reminded about the 1:0 game by mates, its fairly clear to me they like to get one up on their close rivals.

Its like Rugby over here, EVERYONE supports Ireland (there is no NI team) and hates England.

Aye, theres no too many problems with cross-community relations down that way either, I was speaking from a purely selfish point of view.

Actually, The only anti English I,ve ever experienced in Norn Iron has been from republicans.

And there are orange orders as far south as Cork.

Could play the friendly over 2 legs, nice to see Ireland qualify great supporters and we could get together for a guiness (is that spelt right!) after the match and have some banter, and hopefully we will meet in the Euro 2012 final, and where is the final?. We are unofficially the best team in the world at the moment!.

    ROI do have great supporters.

When I mentioned the anti English thing I meant from republicans in N Ireland not southern Irish folk.
