The 5-2 match was undoubtedly the best I've seen Saints play this season. Following on from the great win at home against Leeds and the scrappy win at Barnsley, this was the match when I genuinely thought we could win the league. Yes it was early days but the way Lambert and particularly Lallana played was a joy to behold. Cork was fantastic too I seem to rememeber and we just looked such a threat! I remember being at the Championship game at Portman Road a few years ago when we battered you and lost 2-1 (I think) so I particulaerly enjoyed the 5-2 turn around. Anyway, I'd be very interested (not as an ego boost but out of curiousity) to know if Ipswich have played anybody else who have reached that level this season, particularly at home where I know you were dodgy earlier on in the season? And to Saints fans, was that our best performance? Also having seen some match threads, I apologise for the over arrogance of some Saints fans, I'm not 1 of them but I'm very keen to understand what other fans (particularly with Championhip experience) think of our promotion credentials. Got a lot of time for Ipswich and I hope you go up soon.
I wasn't there but it must be the best. We were unplayable going forward that day by the sounds/looks of it.
I think the game at Ipswich is our best away performance this season, even if there was a worrying spell after half time. I don't agree that the Barnsley game was a scrappy affair at all, we dominated them for all except the last 10 mins (after Chappers got himself sent off). If we had taken our chances as we did at Ipswich it would have been every bit as convincing. After those two games, home teams stopped us having as much time on the ball and we haven't been so dominant since. The most comfortable win I've seen this season was away at Leeds, where I can't remember Kelvin having to make a save all match.
I have to disagree, I think our best performances have been in our most recent matches. Watford away was probably the most comfortable and composed we've been away from home. Forest away was also very good. As far as home performances go, I look no further than our 4-0 win over Derby.
I have to say last season I thought when Norwich beat us 5-1 at home, that was one of the best performances I have seen at this level but for me you were better. You had the same work ethic and good balance which norwich had but ontop of that you had the quality to go with. Although alot of Norwich fans would hate me to say this collectively they are/were a good balanced team but if you took those individuals and put them in other teams, they would not stand out whereas I beleive most of southampton players would. The passing and movement during that game was probably the best I have sen in this division, it was like watchin a knife cut through butter!! Although saying all this our defence that day was awful and I would have put fenando torres to score at least a hatrick against us. And when we actually got the ball at one point at 3-2 we were in the accendancy, and defensively you looked suspect. I would get lulled into a false sence of security until you got the ball back and I realised how bad our defence was. If you go up, if you don't change your team too much and evolve your team rather than completely change it, i think you will do well in the PL.
Have to agree with ptc above, easily outplayed us (although we were dreadful) you looked like scoring with every attack, but as I've already said we were shipping goals like they were going out of fashion and were a team seriously lacking balance but I remember saying 'That lad Banana looks a class act' and whenever I've seen him play he seems to make you lot tick, would happily see you win the league but hopefully you won't win tonight. As for the Norwich match last season... Why did you bring that up? I was enjoying just getting back from work and now I have the image of a very depressing Green and yellow Portman road
