After the events surrounding Hilary and his latest Meltdown and ban I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to security when using the internet. This might help Hilary if he comes back to the site or may help avoid any future Hilary's.

I'll get the ball rolling and then others can add more tips.

1) Don't share info online if you don't want people to find it out! If you post enough true info on one site even under a pseudonym and that info is also available elsewhere, you run the risk of being outed!

 

Another good one:

Set your social media profiles to private!

You can find out a ridiculous amount about someone from a Facebook page or similar and then use that info to find out a lot more elsewhere on the internet.

 

Don’t post using your real name and with a link to a website about your dead cat in your signature.

That’s Internet Security 101.

 

Also don’t use a pic of your actual grid as your avatar

Use a VPN or a Proxy if you're worried about site admin being able to locate you through your IP.

This can be particularly useful if you want to avoid being caught out streaming prem games online. Or you want to use a sock account to go on the wum here on not606.

If you're totally paranoid take it to the next level and use TOR.

In summary. HIAG came back and started crying to brb about how I should be banned for 6 months because I said he played Dire Straits cover versions. He got all weepy about it, flounced off and then got angry and asked brb to ban him

When using a sock account to wum make sure you post at different times of the day with each account. Don't post at the same time thinking that makes it look like it isn't you! In particular don't back yourself up with a sock account or forget which team your sock is supposed to support!

 

Don't go telling people you own a dormant company and give away details of it - there might be people out there who will be able to find out things like your address, your wife's full name ... and even your mother's full name, date of birth and address ...

 

Don't post using your real name and a real picture of yourself in your avatar if your company name is eponymous and you have included the same picture in your Google company profile, particularly if your company biographies page includes you and the wife's life stories.

 

Real picture is pushing it a bit, mate
