My internet on the whole is running a bit slow.
I know it's not my laptop as my phone is the same.
Where it's really struggling though is playing videos.
They're taking ages to buffer or even not loading at all.
Couldn't watch anything last night & today it's the same.
I've ran C Cleaner but it's made no difference at all.
    Any ideas?

got anything else taking up bandwidth? other streams or downloads going?
work internet has been rubbish all week presumably not only due to rural location and apparent works by BT but inclement weather can have an effect too.

Start with the basics - have you tried turning your router off and on again ?
Sometimes a reset and reconnect to your ISP can clean things up a bit.

Yep, done that - several times.
It' been slow all week but it's just refusing to play video at all now.
Plus, the bairn is having problems with it on his xbox 1

Try madthumbs - their porn normally works really well even on a slow connection

    <sorry>

Can;t really help Billy - I work with computers but I teach people how to use spreadsheets and databases rather than anything technical!!

far too many reasons to list why internet slows up such as cables. virus, software, hardware, browser needs updating, OS needs updating, neighbours piggybacking your wireless etc etc - usually I just call my provider to run diagnostics from their end as the first thing to do

If there's no engineering works going on, then you'll need to gain access to your config page for your router.

It's a lot easier than it sounds but difficult to explain on here, so maybe best giving them a call to guide you through it.

Changing channels often works for me, when my speed dips.

Your lad might have a big download or update coming in for the Xbox one as well by the way, if that's the case, you'll have nowt left to play with once that hogs the line.

I'd rather do without than resort to calling them.
I'm with Talktalk & all you get to speak to is a bunch of Malay's & they haven't a ****ing clue.
They are total **** when it comes to customer service & technical back up.

Juan's suggestion for checking the config page on the router might be your next best bet.
That way you can make sure the only devices currently connected are your own devices and there are a few things you can change that might improve things.

The router is usually 192.168.1.254 (although not sure if TalkTalk are different). Admin username and password are usually on the back of the router (not the same as your wifi password).
Once you are logged into the router you should be able to navigate through the pages and check for connected device, etc.
It might even tell you if there are any errors or problems once you log in.

There is also a handy smartphone app called wifianalyzer - it will tell you which other wifi networks are in range and, if they are overlapping with yours, you can change channels (using your router config pages) to an unused channel to cut down on interference.

Lots of things slow it down mate, if I'm downloading a load of stuff off Sky, or the lap top, then have a big update from the Xbox, the internet slows right down.

A lot of people don't know this as well: If you're on a desktop and you've closed say 5 Google Chrome tabs, they're not necessarily closed, if you look into your task manager>processes, you'll see they're open still, taking up huge amounts of memory and often slowing your computer to a snail's pace.

Nowt to do with your internet but still... I only learned that recently.

Seems like you hit the nail on the head.
Switched the xbox off at the mains & ran the speed test again.
    It's gone up to download - 3.68 mbps, Upload - 720 kbps.
    Playing video no bother now.
I assume the xbox download/update will have to start all over again now?
Cheers everybody, we got the solution.

Sometimes the games are downloading updates, they get to a certain percentage, say 58% if you switch the xbox off it'll just pick up again at 58% the next time you fire it up. He could have been downloading games, demo's, films, updates... make sure you've got unlimited downloads, some of those games are 40gb on their own!

Just ordered my broadband package. 17.99 line rental and a fiver a month(for 12 months on a 12 month contract) for fibre optic 50mb broadband with unlimited downloads. Get phone line too with free calls to virgin mobiles so just need a couple of virgin sim cards and my android box to arrive and I'm ready to go.

Seemed to be the best deal out there.
