We've got 3 youngsters playing in this competition - well two and a bit since Corey Gameiro isn't technically with us any longer. "The FIFA Under-20 World Cup begins this weekend â with Ryan Williams and Corey Gameiro playing for Australia and Kerim Frei for host nation Turkey. The two countries will be fighting it out in Group C alongside El Salvador and Colombia, and will face each other in the final group game on 28th June. In total, there are seven host cities which will see matches played over the course of the tournament: Antalya, Bursa, Gaziantep, Istanbul, Kayseri, Rize and Trabzon, with the Fulham trio based initially in Rize and Trabzon ahead of the knockout stages. As the host country, Turkey have automatically qualified and have much do to if they are to placate their vocal home support. The Turks have only appeared twice at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup before: struggling to progress past the group stage in 1993 and losing to Spain in the last-16 in 2005. Strangely, they have only ever won one of their games at the tournament â the 1-0 win over Panama in 2005."
Both Ryan Williams and Corey Gameiro came on as second half subs as Australia were held 1-1 by Columbia. Young Socceroos: Paul Izzo; Jason Geria, Connor Chapman, Curtis Good, Scott Galloway; Joshua Brillante, Jackson Irvine; Daniel de Silva (Jamie MacLaren 90+1'); Andrew Hoole, Connor Pain (Ryan Williams 82'); Adam Taggart (Corey Gameiro 71'). The youngest player at the tournament at just 16, Daniel De Silva, gave the Oz side the advantage a minute into the second half. The Perth Glory midfielder latched on to a perfectly weighted Adam Hoole through ball and his first time shot from close range found the net despite Christian Bonilla getting his hands on the shot on its way in. Colombia equalised on 78 minutes through Jhon Cordoba. A ball into the box from Quintero was laid into the feet of Cordoba and after one touch to control he drilled a low shot, with the aid of the slightest deflection, into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. please log in to view this image Australia celebrate De Silva's opener in Trabzon
Kerim Frei produced a lively display in Turkeyâs comfortable 3-0 victory over El Salvador as the host nation went to the top of Group C. The tricky winger was withdrawn after 65 minutes as he continues to work towards full fitness following an injury-disrupted season, but by that point heâd already helped his side establish a three goal cushion. Salih Uçan handed Turkey an early lead when he finished well after good work from Cenk Sahin, and it was a case of role reversal a minute after the restart when Uçan provided an excellent assist for Sahin to double the advantage. Sahin grabbed his second and Turkeyâs third on 63 minutes with an impressive run and finish, before Frei was withdrawn shortly after. The Turks had opportunities to extend their lead further, but will no doubt be happy to start their campaign with a 3-0 win. please log in to view this image Can't find a picture but apparently the name on the back of Kerim's shirt wasn't Frei - ????

Not so good for our three in the latest games - "Kerim Frei Koyunlu came on in the 69th minute as Turkey fell 1-0 to Colombia in the second match of Group C at the FIFA Under-2o World Cup. Frei was unable to spur his side into action at Rize's Yeni Sehir Stadium, despite a vocal home crowd, after Juan Quintero put the Colombians in pole position in the group. The Turks had begun well as captain Ethem Pulgir saw an early effort fly just over, but then goalkeeper Aykut Ozer was forced into action to make an excellent double save from Jherson Vergara. The second half saw Hakan Calhanoglu go close with a free-kick, but Colombia took a 52nd minute lead as Quintero worked some space on the edge of the box to blast the ball home. The striker went close again but saw his effort cleared off the line by Ilkay Durmus and Frei’s introduction could not rouse the home side into grabbing an equaliser. In the same group, Australia surprisingly lost 2-1 to El Salvador as Corey Gameiro and Ryan Williams made late appearances from the bench. The Young Socceroos went ahead inside 10 minutes as Joshua Brillante hammered a fine strike inside the left-hand post from 25 yards. But then the comeback occurred for a side who had never even scored a goal at the U-20 World Cup previously. On 17 minutes, Diego Coca nodded home from close range after a Jairo Henriquez cross was headed back across goal by Kevin Barahona, sparking incredible celebrations from the underdogs. Before half-time the comeback was complete as a good run from Miguel Ochoa saw his cross turned in by Jose Pena on 40 minutes and there was no way back for Australia. Williams arrived from the bench with 10 minutes to go, with Gameiro joining him on the pitch four minutes later, but neither could force an equaliser. Colombia now lead Group C on four points, with Turkey alongside El Salvador on three and Australia - who face the hosts on Friday – in last place on one point."
Kerim has come out on top in the head-to head between Turkey and Australia. please log in to view this image "Kerim Frei helped Turkey progress to the knock-out stage of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, sending an Australia side containing two Fulham youngsters crashing out. The tricky winger played 90 minutes as Okay Yokuslu’s outrageous late lob secured a 2-1 victory for the host nation, and left Whites prospects Ryan Williams and Corey Gameiro bitterly disappointed. The pair were handed their first starts of the competition and the Young Socceroos would have opened the scoring were it not for Turkish goalkeeper Aykut Ozer, who superbly denied Williams’ low, rifled strike early on. Another chance went begging when Gameiro was released clean through midway through the first half but the striker narrowly missed the target with the goal at his mercy. The Aussies finally went ahead when Williams’ drilled cross found its way to Jamie MacLaren to strike on 52 minutes, but the lead was cancelled out only two minutes later by Hakan Calhanoglu’s equaliser. Only a victory would have stopped Australia being eliminated from Group C, and their fate was sealed when Yokuslu chipped in the 87th minute winner, much to Frei and his teammates’ delight in Trabzon. The result leaves Turkey as runners-up to Colombia in Group C, meaning they face a showdown with France in the last 16 on Wednesday in Gaziantep."
Kerim Frei came on at half time for Turkey in their game against France tonight. Turkey were 2-0 at that point and eventually lost 4-1, so are out of the competition (having reached the last 16) PS Although no longer playing, he will presumably be given a dispensation (2 or 3 weeks??) and not be required to join up with the rest of the squad on Friday.
