I see we are being linked with Cahill, with our injuries at the moment would this be a bad move, and I know its the sun http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/4039627/Utd-join-Chelsea-in-Cahill-hunt.html7 In other news http://www.caughtoffside.com/2012/0...y-land-inter-milan-playmaker-wesley-sneijder/
How is it a bad move? Not saying the lad is playing well this season but with our CB's being injured Cahill rather than Carrick at CB would be better.
I would definitely be happy with Cahill. He'd be a great option to cover for Vidic for the rest of the season, and would mean then when Rio eventually calls it a day we would still have five centre backs and wouldn't be as reliant on Evans as we have been in recent weeks.
Sorry Dave misread you, lack of sleep due to work and well thinking about last nights performance. Cahill my opinion he hasn't done as well this season but considering our injuries and how Evans despite SAF's confidence in him, has finally (sadly to say) shown he cannot live up to his early potential; would probably be worth a shout at around £7 million.
Bugger Cahill. Not good enough to be first choice and would cost too much. If the reports of the breakdown at Chelsea due to his wage demands are true he's deluded... and a bloody merc. Rio/Vidic/Jones would be ahead of him all day long and Smalling has plenty of potential. Id rather Evans over Cahill any day. Not as good, but he's not a complete liability, is happy to sit on the bench (so far) and is probably on 1/3 of the wages Cahill would demand. Cahill's a big fish in a little pond and I don't think he'd adjust well to being behind several others in the pecking order.
I'm a NI fan and believe me, I want to see Evans do well and play often for Man Utd, but even I'm finding it hard to defend him. At this rate we will have no defenders left. It's not a knee jerk reaction looking to bring someone in, but we need cover and need it fast. Rio isn't up to the task right know and Jones is still learning. Yes I agree Smalling is very good and I do rate him but my God, we are really bare at the back right now.
Since he's been out, our defence has been pretty poor. He's been better than Jones defensively. That's not me saying he is better than Jones, but purely as a CB comparision, Evans has been much better this season. I don't understand why we didn't play Rafael as well, surely having someone who is a natural in that position but not in good form/not fully fit/inexperienced will always be better than someone who is just filling in.
To me Evans is suffering from a lack of confidence at OT. I have seen him play at Windsor Park for NI during his "bad" times and he has been excellent against international CF's.
I think he'd be a bargain and would fit right in, I'm confident we'll actually get him. The problem with the players you mention Biggun are that Rio is no longer what he was, a million miles from it in fact, Vidic is out for the season with no guarantee he'll be the same player on his return and Jones is needed in the centre of midfield if we fail to sign anyone there. Smalling spends a lot of time injured/ill too so to get an England international for £7 million is a snip, he would command decent wages but if we're to be successful we have to pay them to certain players. Watch this space, I think we'll get him.
I thought the Cahill to Chelsea transfer was a done deal? I think he is a very good player and would be a great addition to our team especially with our injury plagued defense.
The way he has played against the likes of Torres and Drogba when they were are their peak of their powers a few years ago, you can't be a bad defender if you can do that. You can't be a bad defender if you break up the Rio Vidic partnership which was the best in the world by 2009. But I can't defend the fact that he hasn't shown that kind of form consistantly the last few seasons. But Jones is not there at CB yet and he needs a lot more work than Evans did when he broke into the first team. For now, Jones could be used in CM again if Smalling and Rafael are back fully fit. Regarding the OP, I don't get the fuss over Cahill as well. He isn't any better than what we have now despite playing PL for much longer and his wage demands are excessive if the rumours are correct. I don't think he's worth 100k a week but even the likes of O'Shea were on 80k a week I think.
We need defensive cover but would he come to a club where he probably isn't going to be first choice come next season? If he goes Chelsea he is almost guaranteed a starter. I don't think he will ever be as good as Smalling or Jones. Richie de Laet, can he be recalled? He can play all along the back four as well.
O'Shea/Brown were probably on more like 50k a week. That's tended to be the "squad player" ballpark. Trouble isn't necessarily Cahill, but with Rio and Vidic supposedly on the 100k+ pw mark United are already spending a lot of money and I think Cahill is a waste. Rio's back, Jones is fit and Smalling/Evans are due back soon. If Rio's slide is terminal better to offload him at the end of the season, get rid of his huge wages and spend time looking for the right man to come in rather than high-jacking the Cahill deal.
We do need cover, I think we're better off getting someone more experienced. I know Cahill is quite experienced, an England international but I don't think he will add anything to the first team. I was saying that about Ashley Young as well. In theory that's probably fine but again, I think what about next season and he isn't going to be a first team player for us I don't think and would he want that?
In all fairness to Evans the last couple of games he played before his injury he played pretty decent, and Evans is strong in the air, and I have a feeling Newcastle wouldn't have scored their first goal if he was playing. Also I still feel Smalling is currently a much better CB than Jones.
