Bad bad decision once again by the board. Last edited by Red Robin; 02/12/2013 at 09:50 AM. .
I have never been keen but I will have to admit he has steadied the ship and above all kept us up, a pretty tall order after the mess the last tosser left us in. I have tried to support all our previous managers to various degrees of my truly honest belief but SOD was probably the worst manager we have ever employed.! SC has to be given his due for the signing of Wade Elliott, he has been a revelation in midfield (despite some of the ludicrous comments by some after 1 game) So far so good, but Mckinnes also got us to a similar point in his first season (at a higher level) so No I'm not proclaiming the next messiah just yet, but happy so far.
I had my doubts at first but fair play, we have stopped our downward slide thanks to his management, I can't lie I was one of the fans that believed in the SOD philosophy but thank god common sense prevailed and we've survived, we have got to go with Cotts, he has deserved and earned the chance.
Whether you like or loath Cotts, he has done the one thing, and only one thing he was brought in to do, and that was to keep us up. It's still a crap division in terms of overall quality and it wont be any better next year. If we can keep what we have to a degree and find a couple of defenders that can actually defend (our goals against record is appalling) then we should comfortably be top 6 in 2014/15.
I really like Cotterill. I don't think we've had a proper fan-manager connection since Gary J. McInnes was great in his first season and I honestly thought he would be the one.... but after that Cardiff game it fell apart and it was worse than Millen... Cotterill.... Im going to say it now and put my neck on the line... WILL get us PROMOTED next year.
He appears to have sorted the defence out to me, I don't know what our recent goals against record is but it's surely improved a lot, we need to go in to nest season with some consistency and that means the team too.. The back 4/3 will get better by playing together, I would give it a chance myself.
I am happy to admit that SC has so far proved me completely wrong. I was unhappy that they dumped SOD as I thought he was following the right course with a young team playing a possession based game. No doubt SC is better with the media and plays a generally more positive attacking team. However we have got out the brown stuff by once again signing a bunch of journeyman near the end of their careers. I honestly think SOD was set against this which let's face it any idiot could do with enough money and the right contacts. If we sign em on this summer I fear we are going nowhere. We need to be looking for exciting younger players as we said we would under SOD. If we revert to type I guess S C will do as well as anyone but where is the vision of the exciting talented YOUNG team we were told was now our aim?
The only player, over 30 Cotterill has signed is Elliott and he's been fantastic for us. Granted one of his pernament signings has not been.
Nosworty is 33 and ElAbd is nearly 30 and realistically a 3.5 year contract takes him to the end of a career.
El abd mmmmmm to be far has been a poor signing, gets caught out of position, prefer the three at the back who are currently playing,Flint still not sure on him either.
Rather than talk about individual players my point is about the overall strategy. SOD went one way - lots of youngsters he hoped would gradually improve and give us a long term future. SC has been more pragmatic and gone for more experienced, older players. Obviously SOD went too far that way and we needed to do something to start winning games. Cotterill has done well in the short-term and boy did we need it! But Bryan has only become a cameo player - and Wes Burns has been largely only on the bench too. SC worries me longer term as I sense he doesn't buy-in to the concept of bringing through young talent. He has won me over on the short-term approach but the summer will give more idea of whether he has a longer-term vision that will take us forward in the way SOD was trying to (albeit too slowly and with too little focus on the here-and-now).
