The wonders of wikipedia...

He developed an interest in football watching Norwich, but was brought up at Watford Grammar School. A Watford stand is named after him... the one thing we don't know is it doesn't tell us who he was a fan of!

Sounds like he did wonders for the rules and refereeing, but he is also a very controversial figure for his support of apartheid South Africa. Different times, I suppose.

Could always ask someone on the Watford board who is big on their history I suppose.

Correction to my previous post - he was born in Watford and taught at Watford Boys Grammar School as a sports coach

FURTHER EDIT: it appears all sorts of people and websites are getting confused, especially me <yikes>

He wasn't born in Watford as well... he was born in Mutford, near Lowestoft <laugh>

in the world of football, it seems we are far from alone in seeing our team in this situation.

yet we want the manager sacked for it.

While we are wielding cliches - didn't someone once say "The best form of defence is attack" - maybe that one should be consigned to history too.

"Cliches ? I didn't get where I am today by talking in cliches" !

I've said before that it is high time they changed the system to match other professional sports - four points for a win, two points for a draw and bonus points relating to goals scored.

Rugby did it to prevent defensive play.

It won't happen, but it should.

Years ago, I used to play 5 aside, and they used to award 4 points for each goal and 1 point for every corner.

If the match was tied, then obviously the amount of corners came into play.

interesting to touch on the point system though. i’ve always felt it could be improved although i’ve never quite figured out how! any ideas? i think the easiest to implement would be a bonus point if you score 3+ in a game but i suspect in the premier league you’d see the huge gulf between the top clubs and those below grow even wider. perhaps another way would be to award a bonus point for a team if they score more than one goal when they lose. problem is, people forget it but there is an art, a skill to defending - it is an important aspect of football. to try and effectively make it irrelevant in football is sad. there’s more to football than seeing loads of goals. i don’t know. maybe its best left as is... <laugh>

How about 2 points for a score draw?

or you get 1 point for a draw a home and 2 points for a draw away, and 3 points for a home win, 4 points for an away win.
