From his weekly column in The Independent Congratulations to Brian McDermott and Reading for gaining promotion to the Premier League. I know just how he feels and it's a wonderful emotion. I'm delighted for Brian, who has been an unsung hero â until now. I'm also pleased for three of my old players who have been part of their campaign. Mikele Leigertwood, who scored the goal that took them up, Kaspars Gorkss and, on loan, Matt Connolly. The irony is Kaspars should be playing for their promotion rivals Southampton. When I was at QPR, we agreed a deal in August and he was on his way there to finalise the move. But I got cheesed off with the way Nicola Cortese, the Southampton chairman, was messing us about. I'd spoken to Brian McDermott about Kaspars, and how good he'd be for Reading. Brian was interested so I called Kaspars and told him to divert. I told him Reading was a better bet for him, a lovely club and no need to move house. I bet he and Brian are glad he listened. Mikele and Kaspars are two wonderful professionals. I'm sure they won't mind me saying they are not the most technically gifted, but both go about their jobs without fuss and I'd imagine they are the first two names on Brian's teamsheet, as we all need players like that. Matt's another good pro and while he's only played five games for Reading they won them all, conceding just one goal, so he's done his bit. Even with all the media coverage there is still stuff going on under the radar.....
For me, this is another shocking NW comment. No need for this at all. I'm sure McDermott won't be too happy about this comment either.
Yes, but nuts he wouldn't be saying it if he wasn't sure they wouldn't mind him saying it. I remember reading at the time the story about NW being p'd off with the owner of Southampton, but of course the haste with which Gorkss was dispatched did smell of something. Obviously Kaspar and NW had a big falling out; wonder will Gorkss take up his right of reply?
Yeah, still not telling it like it was is he? When the news started coming in about Saints' interest in Gorkss, none of us fans could see us letting him go - until it became clearer that he wasn't featuring in friendlies etc.. Why was Warnock so keen to get him gone that as Southampton procrastinated, NW's suggesting Reading should consider taking Gorkss? We all thought Gorkss to be our better CB option...
He really doesnt cover himself in much glory does he? How many DCM and CBs are technically gifted in the NPC? Even in our team now, you could only really count Faurlin. Not Derry or any of our CBs.
NW showing his real side again Dreadful as usual He is all fur and no knickers He will be sacked by Leeds as well Dinosaur but I thank him sincerely for what he did for QPR but he is not a great manager IMO
Well QPRNuts, I'm afraid he is bang on the money.......they shouldn't be offended.....both defensive position players. How many defensive players in the Championship have the finesse of a prem midfielder?!.......Strong, good in the air and not afraid to put in a challenge.....simple football. simple defending.
There is a lot or irony in this statement" Mikele and Kaspars are two wonderful professionals. I'm sure they won't mind me saying they are not the most technically gifted, but both go about their jobs without fuss and I'd imagine they are the first two names on Brian's teamsheet, as we all need players like that" is that NW brought Clint Hill and Shaun Derry to QPR. Again, these two are not the most technically gifted, but they brought alot to the club last season and this one. Mikele and Kaspars have both done brilliantly for Reading, maybe NW should have said that some managers prefer certain players than others. I think that Kaspars would have been good for QPR this season, not so sure about Mikele as I am not sure he would have fitted into the system we have played. However, congrats to both players, and look forward to a battle of the hoops next season in the Premier League
Leigertwood is miles away from being a Premiership player. It will be interesting to see how Gorkss performs but I'm not convinced he will be good enough.
COLIN was always COLIN yet guys used to get incensed on here when I called him that. Hes nowhere near as bad as he was when he was younger as he was a right dick-head then. In fact hes not too bad these days a'tall.
Spot on Swords, though our Colin still regularly engages foot with mouth. Couple of weeks ago he said he wished this season was over so he could rebuild at Leeds. Huge motivation for the current squad and great news for Leeds season ticket holders. Anyone else and I would feel sorry for them.
