Now this is more like it. I would love to see this happen. Sunderland Linked With Wickham Move Fri 10th Jun 2011 08:15 Sunderland have renewed their interest in Town striker Connor Wickham, according to one of this morningâs papers. The Black Cats are claimed to be ready to use some of the £16 million they have received from Liverpool for Jordan Henderson to make a £9 million offer for the Blues youngster. Wearsiders boss Steve Bruce is a known admirer of Wickham and Sunderland have been mentioned in connection with the frontman fairly regularly over the last year. However, several of todayâs other papers claim Sunderland have opted against a move for the 18-year-old as they believe the Hereford-born striker is off to Liverpool with a £10 million Reds bid on the cards. A week ago, an £8 million Liverpool offer was widely reported to have been rebuffed by the Blues, although there is still no confirmation from either club. Wickham himself would appear less likely to join the Black Cats in any case with Blues boss Paul Jewell saying in March that the England U21 international would only be interested in moving to one of the Premier Leagueâs bigger clubs. Having suffered a minor ankle knock in training with the England U21s in Denmark yesterday, Wickham will be hoping to win his fourth cap at that level on Sunday when Stuart Pearceâs side take on Spain in their opening group game in Viborg (Sky Sports One/HD1 4.30pm). The English youngsters, of whom Wickham is the most junior and the only outfield player from a Championship club, subsequently face Ukraine next Wednesday and the Czech Republic on the following Sunday.
know little about him, but what i have heard has been positive, thought the scousers were after him...
According to Twitter he is aware of our interest but not keen. Any bid would be pointless. He's nailed on to go to Liverpool.
The boy isn't stupid (actually, I don't know him, he could well be..) BUT why would he pick Liverpool over us at his age? The entire footballing world knows that LFC = Suarez (24) and Carroll (22) up front for the forseeable future. All he'd do would be move there to sit on a bench, which as a teenager looking to develop is completely pointless. Come to Sunderland and play football!
More money. Prestige of playing for one of the big four. On top of that if you presume he's a confidant young chap. He can probably see himself in the first team in six months. This one's a none starter.
Liverpool or Sunderland, for a footballer there is no option here and unfortunately its Liverpool everytime, even more so with Liverpool buying Henderson it will show Wickham that they are building a youthful team and will give them all the opportunities and help they need, unlike ourselves who seem to be hell bent on signing grandads from Man U's B team
watched uruguay v holland yesterday, with the suarez and kuyt, throw carroll henderson into the mix, and any young footballer will say to themselves, that's why i want lfc. to play with the likes of them.
"Sunderland linked with Whickham move." **** that an aarrl, full of mags and right next to Gatesheed, no way Jose!
But he wouldn't play!! he'd be moving for a bench-warming spot! he must realistically know suarez and carrol are their top 2 for years to come. all im saying is yes, they are the bigger club with better players, but we can offer the chance to play regular first team football, which they can't. he'd go there and immediately find himself in the same boat as welbeck and sturridge. needing game time!
if this was the case why would someone like hernandez go to man u, thinking rooney, berbatov etc would be ahead of him. he may go to lfc, get a chance and take it, you never know... if young players have no chance, why go? it's called ambition...
Take it from me, the deal to sign for us is more or less complete. It will be finalised after the euro 21's
Selling Henderson though, then trying to buy Wickham...Where is the logic in this? we should be keeping Henderson & buying Wickham, Bruce has been playing too much golf with Ashley
