i thought tettey had a cracking match until the mistake so to score so lowly is harsh. its funny how the nationals always mark players really low if they make one mistake but play really well for the rest of the match. same as if a player scores a goal, they tend to give them a high mark even if its all they did. i remember crouch having a stinker against man city i think, absolutely everything he did was hopeless but then he unleashed the volley of all volleys and scored 8's and 9s in the press the following day. it was probably his worst performance of the season!!

Strange that they ignore their own ratings in the aggregate, as yesterday in the indie our team was all 7/10 except ruddy who was 6 and fer 8 and was also given man of the match, all Chelsea were 7's.

There is no standardisation when it comes to these performance ratings, and many of the ratings that accompany match reports in the press are simply the particular reporter's subjective assessment. Web sites like Squawka have their own stats-based algorithms which generate ratings, but unless you know in each case which onfield events count and what weighting is attached to each sort of event (e.g. goals), you simply don't know what to make of them. For example, Squawka's final ratings for each team at the end of Sunday's game were Norwich -18 (minus 18!) v Chelsea +382. When you look at the time line you can see that the two goals at the end caused the ratings to diverge dramatically, so clearly a goal is accorded considerable weight. But you haven't a clue what the rest is all about. Every such rating system should have to publish details of how the rating is arrived at.

Squawka's Man of the Match was Lampard. <ok>

No statistical analysis is worth anything unless the basis of the analysis is given, which it seldom is. Any such analysis should only be considered as a part of the whole picture rather than anything definitive in itself.

ruddy i fear is quickly losing his grip on the goalkeeping position, he is over weight , slow to get down to low balls ,and over all i can see you having to get in a new keeper.

Numbers mesmerise people. They have the appearance of fact whereas they are often merely opinion dressed up as fact.

I am waiting for Robbie to blast me down for saying this!

You know I'd never do that vietnam!

There are plenty of such cases. Several posters on here do it in their after-match reports. No harm in it because there no pretence at doing anything else. I've no idea how the papers whose ratings are averaged by the Independent arrive at their figures, but in all probability it is just the reporter's opinion. Betting sites like Squawka though give ratings generated from match stats. In their case it's not so much a matter of "opinion" but rather "selectivity" in constructing the algorithm generating the rating from a chosen sub-set of match stats (see above posts about the Squawka stats). <ok>

On (one of) the MOTD programmes, Alan Hansen pinpointed Olsson as the chief culprit. Olsson was stationed centrally on the half-way line. When the ball was cleared he "followed the ball" instead of tracking Hazard's run, in effect taking himself out of the equation. Had he run straight back towards the goal he would have been in a position to at least make Hazard's job more difficult. So you could say marking Tettey down for his failure to clear was doubly unfair! <ok>

For once I thought Hansen's comments were well reasoned, including that one on Olsson, but his first responsibility was to cover the left flank. It's always easy in hindsight! That's two good performances in a row and the next one against Arsenal will be interesting.

To be fair Rick, I think Hansen is a fair summariser, especially on defensive matters, it's his obscene salary that bugs me, how can £40K per show be justified?
