Newcastle United managing director Derek Llambias has detailed the reasons why the club did not sign a new striker before the transfer window closed.

Responding to some fans' frustrations, Llambias said: "We have a very clear transfer policy.

"We will not make knee-jerk decisions at the last minute which are not in the best interests of the club."

Manager Alan Pardew did buy Demba Ba from West Ham, but Llambias said the club were denied other targets.

"Work to bring a striker into the club began early in the summer," he added. "Negotiations were complex and protracted and unfortunately it was disappointing that ultimately we could not secure our priority target.



"We did turn our attention to alternative prospects in the latter stages of the window.

"We understand that supporters will feel frustrated that we did not sign another striker during the window, but it was not for lack of trying that we did not bring our final target in."

Newcastle had a £12m bid for 26-year-old Costa Rica international Bryan Ruiz accepted by FC Twente but failed to agree personal terms with the player.

Pardew has so far started with variations of Ba, Shola Ameobi, Leon Best and Peter Lovenkrands in attack in the Premier League, with Best scoring twice in the 2-1 win over Fulham on Sunday.

Llambias also said the club's policy of buying early in the transfer window has paid off.

"Our aim was to secure young players who represented value for money and could add real strength to the squad. We feel we have signed some players of exceptional quality.

"Yohan Cabaye, Sylvain Marveaux, Mehdi Abeid, Demba Ba and Gabriel Obertan were all brought in early and we have seen these players settle quickly into the squad and perform well on the pitch".

Newcastle also added the signings of Italian defender Davide Santon and goalkeeper Rob Elliot before the transfer window closed on Wednesday.

Alan Pardew's side are sixth in the Premier League with two wins and a draw from their opening three fixtures.

Joey Barton, Kevin Nolan and Jose Enrique have been the highest profile departures from St James' Park this summer.

Meh, if I'm honest, there ain't a lot we can do except hope we can secure a target in January. We've been ****ed over by clubs a lot during this window. Lyon, PSV, Sochaux (I'd hardly bet against the Sochaux chairman being in cahoots with St. Etienne, who just coincidentally happened to sign the one player Sochaux wanted to replace Maiga...) just have to hope it doesn't happen again.
