Graham Rock of The Guardian/The Observer was one of my favourite racing journalists. This was the last article he wrote before he, sadly, died of leukaemia in November, 2001, at far too young an age. http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2001/nov/18/horseracing.comment I believe it was Jim McGrath, the Australian commentator, who said that when he arrived in the UK from downunder and was looking for a job, it was Graham Rock who put him up until he found work. A good man remembered.
Thanks Swan, Very interesting. I seem to have something in common with this chap. 1. I also slept out on Devil's Dyke with school mates (can't remember if it was 3 or 4). Must have been 1960 or thereabouts. 2. His second wife was named Joan, as was my first
What a superb piece, very many thanks for posting this Swanny. In today's push and shove world it always fills me with joy to read an article which takes us back to a more gentle age. Quite simply wonderful.
Thanks guys, so glad I stumbled on this piece, which was quite by accident. George, I agree, I bet Graham had dozens of stories to relate, think I will check on any books he might have written; and, yes, Oddy, I do believe it was a gentler age.
