football was played by real men, in all conditions. Not drawn by the greed of money but purely the love of the game. No gloves, thermals and fancy footwear, no rolling about on the grass feigning a decision but instead played with pride. When passionate blood, sweat and tears were shed for a match. When supporters could stand side by side on the terraces and cheer in a time before total TV coverage and modern all seater stadiums.

True legends, the best, something the modern game can only look back on with awe in the skill of a player from a bygone time, when football was only played on grass, Bill Shankly considered him to be the greatest player to ever play the game.

In the words of Preston Chairman; "If tha' doesn't play for us, tha' doesn't play for anybody."

I remember doing the 'Spot the ball' competitions - but you had to get the centre of the cross exactly in line with the centre point of the 'missing' ball to stand any chance of a win.
It's quite amazing how small you could make your X so as to fit more of them in a square inch (2.54cm)

Tom Finney. The greatest English player of all time and a really good bloke. Nobody had a bad word to say about him.

Never booked in his whole career.

Two quotes from Bill Shankly sum up the greatness of the man

Tom Finney would have been great in any team, in any match and in any age ... even if he had been wearing an overcoat

And asked how Finney compared to player in the 'modern' era "Aye, he's as good as Tommy – but then Tommy's nearly 60 now"

A wonderful player and a gentleman.

RIP
