Napoli are said to be frustrated at the delay in their move for Marouane Fellaini and could turn to Villarreal midfielder Jonathan de Guzman instead.

Napoli have been chasing Manchester United man Marouane Fellaini for a while now without success and the Partenopei are reportedly also eyeing Jonathan de Guzman, who may be a simpler swoop.

Rafa Benitez's quest to add a midfielder to the ranks this summer has become an epic saga with Napoli being rebuffed for a host of players.

After moves for Maxime Gonalons, Javier Mascherano and Sandro fell by the wayside, it seemed the Italians had found their man in unsettled Manchester United man Fellaini.

But talks have proved torturous with United's demands for a loan fee too great for Napoli and Fellaini's wages possibly beyond their resources.

According to Italian newspaper Il Mattino, Napoli could change direction once again and look to former Swansea player de Guzman.

The Dutch international is supposedly already in advanced talks with Queens Park Rangers who are looking to close out a £7 million deal with Villarreal as quickly as possible.

But Napoli are said to be investigating the possibility of offering Villarreal similar terms to those they proposed for Fellaini - a season loan with the option of a permanent deal afterwards.

It is suggested that Napoli would have a good chance of luring de Guzman and would be more likely to agree wages with him than with Fellaini.

De Guzman spent two years on loan to Swansea and scored nine goals in 71 appearances, but now he is looking for a new club after the Swans didn't agree a permanent switch and he doesn't appear to be wanted by Villarreal.

I hope this isn't the case, he would be a massive signing for us and a true statement of intent...
