His name is Coates, his Grandparents were Scottish. It is not our fault that when they went to Uruguay, the locals made an absolute mess of the pronunciation. Now he is back home, we should be using his proper name and not being all understanding and worldly wise and pandering to the daft South Americans. It's Coates, as In I'll get mine....

I'll pronounce the way he says it.... and I'm pretty sure he doesn't say Coates. It's HIS name, the way HE pronounces it is correct....

It's like Spanish people called Jesus, you don't say it the same way as Jesus Christ, you pronounce is "Heyzus" because that's the way they pronounce it.

    Completely agree.

I think it's just shows respect to pronounce someones name the way they want it to be pronounced. I don't see why anyone should be able to do as they please and say any different when it's not anything to do with them.

Perhaps you could contact him and ask him if he wouldn'tt mind changing the pronunciation of his name so it doesn't keep you awake at night.:p
It has to be pronounced the way he pronounces it after all its his name.

    He calls himself Co-at-ez.

I'd be annoyed if people started pronouncing my name as Jacques or something instead of Jack.

IT's ridiculous, if his name was sebastien Johnson, (through say and English grandfather) it would be jsut as absurd as calling him "yonson".

Its pronouced Kwatez, but when pronounced as its spelt its Coats which techically is the correct pronounciation as his dad is Scottish.

It's not his name, it's his Grandparent's name. I remember when I work at a school, there was a girl called Yvonne, but her parents had seen the name written down, and so they pronounced it "Why-vonne" Is it right to re-enforce their stupidity, and also use the phonetic pronunciation? Or do you correct her stupid parents and call the girl "Evonne" just like everyone else called Yvonne?

As you say, people should respect the correct pronunciation of Jesus, then why don't the Uruguayans respect the correct pronunciation of Coates?

Disclaimer, I'm not being serious about this. But it takes me back to Glenn Hysén, who everyone got wrong, and also the Arsenal team a few years back, when they never had a single English person in the team, and so the Gooners game them all English names, like Bob Pirez.
