All week I've been avidly reading the write ups made by various people about Argyle and trying to join in the wave of positivity that is going around. Everyone thinks Adams is the mesiah, Reid has started his seasons fire, Carey is the greatest, our defence is marvelous and so on and so on. There is only one bad word being said about things green and that's the Beeb who have done a survey and says we are expensive to follow. Even that is being rubbished by both the club and certain stout suporters and I don't just mean fat ones. Is it just me or are there others, whilst enjoying the ride, expecting the wheels to come off anytime now? You know the sort of thing when you wake up and find it has all been a dream and none of it has really happened. This positive thing is normally quite alien at Home Park and certainly in Jannerland. If a Janner finds a tenner then he moans it wasn't a twenty. Is there too much positivity going around and it won't and can't last.
Positivity is the name of the game at the moment at Home Park....that's for sure. My negative bit is that the manager and a few of the players are sticking their heads a little bit too much above the parapet..... and will be noticed by those who want to take them away from us for their own benefit......with the whole squad on one year contracts not much money will be needed to do that.....(none at all next summer).....and money will be something that will attract Brent the businessman......the question is.... do you hang on to your assets and keep them by offering them better contracts.......or sell them (in Jan) to pay off the debt and hopefully replace them with other good players. If Derek Adams is one of the ones we let go for money (only a 2yr contract) will there ever be an improvement without him at Argyle.....he is at present a gem we cannot afford to lose.
As the season is getting better and better (at least for the time being) I think Brent should move sooner rather than later to extend key players' contracts where he can. Carey and Jervis are definite successes and Reuben Reid's contract should be stretched as far as is reasonable. That would give the players certainty but at the same time tie them. Perhaps the circumstances in which they would be released at the right price should be made clear. That way, they can win but can't lose by signing a longer contract. I suggest we'd under no circumstances realease them to a League 2 - or League 1 club either, since at this point it looks quite conceivable we'll be playing there next year. Given the gap in wages available, it would be hard to resist releasing them to clubs above that level. I think Adams is the type who has a definite career plan: doubt there's much Brent can do to keep him but to provide finance to keep the club (and his career) moving forward. As soon as the club's progress stalls, Adams is likely to want to cash in and move on. It was said when Adams was appointed that he fully accepted a constrained budget, so there shouldn't be a problem in the short term but if we do go up, a fair proportion of the extra income will have to go into next year's budget.
I've mentioned elsewhere that Adams cannot do anything financially at present......for instance regarding Deniz Mehmet....because of financial restraints.....that was his wording......so extending any current contracts would have to wait until january.....which would be when his three loanees would be leaving.....Boateng and possibly Tanner he might try to keep longer.....so it could get messy.....and would Adams be happy with too much in the way of "financial restraints" with some of his players drawing attention from Championship or even Div 1 clubs......so as I said....it could get messy.
I can't see why he should have nothing to spare until January and that makes no sense. Our gate receipts in the first matches at home have been excellent and bigger than must have been budgeted for. Even including the JPT. I also do not believe he has spent every penny of his previously given budget. We have the smallest squad in the world. This is no time for messing about and Brent should ease up on the purse strings and allow for extending contracts NOW. It would be poor business if nothing else if they don't start the process.
I am fairly confident that the current contracts are such that it would be fairly expensive to lose many players in Jan (i.e they would cost too much for would be poachers). Yes they are 1 year contracts but I suspect some of the clauses will be invoked in Jan to extend the current deals. As far as DA is concerned I think he is appreciative of the chance he has been given and I fully expect he will be here for at least 2 seasons-thereafter will depend on how successful he/we are. As far as the OP is concerned, and as I have said on several occasions, I've only lived here for 31 years so the Janner negativity hasn't yet permeated into my soul. I actually think we are on the up and will have a successful season-but then again I have always thought that the future would be bright after JB took over and ran the club as a proper business rather than some sort of amateur chums' club.
If the 1 year contracts give PAFC options to extend then that's much better news. However, I don't think anyone would argue that Carey, Jervis and Reid are the creative cornerstone for the next few seasons which (sit down and take a deep breath Sensible) will, under this manager, I hope see us looking upwards at the Championship. Yes, I know I've argued against changing manager all the time but the point was that 9 times out of 10, you're no better off. This is the other 1 occasion.
Adams is bound to get a good offer soon, especially if he takes us up. My way of coping is to accept that all these things end sooner than we would like, and enjoy this seasons promotion.
Welcome to Not 606 Womble. Just a quick statement publicly before we move on. I'm obviously aware you post in several places if you are the same Womble. This is a forum with a small following unlike the others claim to have. We aren't trying to compete and are nowhere near as rude to other members as elsewhere. We do have differing opinions and they are quite acceptable as long as people are polite. Anyone gets stroppy and abusive and they tend to not last very long. None of the members want or need the hassle. There is no agenda and nobody slags off other forums either. You are allowed to like or dislike Brent as is your want. Anyway enough rambling. No manager lasts forever even at the very top clubs and no matter how much success they have. So I agree that Adams will be on other clubs radar as and when they want to lose their current incumbents. It's still ok to hope he wants to stay and do it here though even if you do know it might not happen. It's the same with your best players isn't it. You can't blame them for taking the extra shilling elsewhere because given the same opportunity we would more likely do the same.
Cheers boys, seems nice and friendly on here. I don't expect Adams to be here too long, I just hope we get to keep him for a full seasons or hopefully 2. Anything else maybe unrealistic.
Depends if we move on fast enough really. If, and it is a bit of a big if, we get promoted this year and then look like repeating the glory years of previous and doing it again then he might think he would want his place in Janner folklore and stay to see the job through. Trouble is the money being dangled from the bigger fish is hard to ignore and the possible success much easier to obtain. As a Janner and a supporter I would always pick Argyle above moving anywhere else but there aren't too many Janners who could do it for us. Just a few thousand who think they could......
Getting promoted ...with Adams help.... would do his CV no harm at all.......Argyle can only go up one Division at a time....but a successful manager like Adams could probably jump two Divisions at once.....hard for a young manager to refuse.....unless he gets green blood running through his veins and that would take a lot longer to achieve......he must still have Ross County in his DNA.
