Los Angeles (AFP) - Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Will Smith may need surgery after tearing a right knee ligament taking off his shoes in the clubhouse.

Smith, who was expected to share closing pitching duties with Jeremy Jeffress in the upcoming season, learned the diagnosis on Friday.

He said Saturday he hurt himself when he toppled over while standing on one leg, trying to remove the shoe from his other foot.

"I pulled hard (on the shoe) and it stayed on," he said. "My knee just went up and popped. Everyone tells you there is nothing you can do about it, but you still feel like you are letting people down."

Smith tore a ligament on the outside of the knee that connects the femur to the lower leg. The right leg is the left-hander's plant leg in his pitching motion.

Manager Craig Counsell said the team will know in the next few days exactly how long Smith will be out.

"The recovery is a little longer with surgery," Counsell said. "It's tough for us, it's tough for Will. There is going to be somebody in (the clubhouse) that takes this opportunity and makes a lot of it."
