As it says in the title, if you could buy one player for United who would it be and why?

The caveat being that they currently play for another club within the premier league.

No Messi nonsense and such like because it isn't going to happen so from within the PL and reasonable.

Would be absolutely perfect coming in off our right wing, has pace, guile and can't half finish.

    Defends well also.

    In a nutshell a genuine United No.7.

Phillipe Coutinho. Purely for the scouser head explosion which would result.

Seriously tho', probably Harry Kane. I can see the argument for Mahrez, but not convinced we need another wide attacking player when what we are lacking is a cutting edge up front.

Tho' Van Gaal would probably play Kane on the wing and tell him not to shoot until at least 15 passes have been made.

Surely the bit on bold is a contradiction?

He most definitely does give a cutting edge up front, one which we are sadly lacking from any of our current wide players.

I can see the argument for another striker of course but really in Martial and Rooney we should be fine, especially with a player like Mahrez feeding them and contributing his own goals.

Not really - we are creating chances, and despite having only ten men we created about as much as West Brom yesterday. But we aren't finishing them, or really testing the goalkeeper enough.

Rooney and Martial can threaten from deep or off the wings and score, but I don't think we currently have anyone who can do what Rondon did to us yesterday - get the ball in the box, pick a spot and put the ball away.

Vardy. Completely untested at the top level, but direct, ballsy and pacey.

I don't think any of our wide players provide a cutting edge.
They certainly provide very few gilt edged chances.

I'd look at the defence, I'm split between Ashley Williams (31) or Toby Alderwiereld (27)

Would probably go for the latter just because of age, but Williams is definitely the much needed leader we need at the back to partner Smalling.

I agree with Swarbs that our biggest issue is scoring goals, that's why I think a striker is our number 1 priority. I'd agree with Kane as the number 1 choice too as it happens.

If we went for a defender I think I'd want to buy shawcross back from Stoke.

Untested at top level? This is his second season in the premier league, is currently playing for the team at the top of the Premier league and has played for England.

A one season run to the top of the PL is not the top level. Try a season or two at the top of the PL, CL, FA Cup with injuries, playing out of position because of injuries/suspensions in major games THEN we can make a judgment on him. Having said that, I'd give him that try at our place - Leicestrershiree will be back to normal next season once transfers in/out and inflated egos take hold.

    Of course it is.

****'s sake, if long term champions league experience is a prerequisite then our options become very, very limited.

I didn't realise Kane had that by the way, must have missed it.

Personally, I class Kane in exactly the same way as Vardy. Both excellent strikers, but one transfer away from seeing if they really have the talent to perform at the same level at another club. How many times have we seen top goal scorers fall flat on their ar5e once they move to a 'top level' club - it's very easy to be a big fish in a small pond - just look at Memphis - top goal scorer in his league one season , struggling at a new club the next.

They both have talent in abundance - whether they can continue that form after several tough seasons performing at the top with Internationals, European and Cup football is quite another thing - and so, in my opinion, they are untested at the top level.

Sometimes you've got to trust what you see.

Both, in my opinion, top players but I don't think we need a finisher, we need a supplier and for me that man is Mahrez.

That he also scores plenty is a bonus.

I'd sign up Ashley Williams in a shot too but we were only chosing one. I don't see his age as an issue, if anything he's at the perfect age to take the plunge at a higher level and finish off his career. Quite why United haven't been interested for the last couple of years is beyond me.

Would be perfect alongside Mike and in the meantime the likes of Phil Jones can finally grow into his body.
