in his prime from each position (keeper, defender, midfielder and striker), who they be? Keeper? Defender? Midfielder? Striker? Has to be players you have actually seen play!
Keeper: Nigel Martin Defender: Steve Elliott Midfielder: Vitālijs Astafjevs Striker: Rickie Lambert
I've been going since 2002, so Goalkeeper: Steve Phillips Defender: Steve Elliott Midfielder: Vitalijs Astafjevs Striker: Rickie Lambert (with Will Hoskins second)
This is really difficult for those of us who go back a long way! Early doors for me everybody played in 'modified hobnail boots'; kicked a heavy sodden leather ball and all teams used a rigid 2;3;5 formation, and each player's role was pretty much dictated by the number on their shirt. It's easiest with keepers and Rovers have had some good goal keepers; Bert Hoyle, Bernard Hall, Nigel Martyn, but for me the best was Jim Eadie. He should have played regularly for Scotland, but was ousted by the poorer keeper at first div. Tottenham. Defenders. The format of the game has changed so much and most of the old fashioned style guys would have been dismissed from the park after no more than two tackles. David Pyle's sliding tackle; ball first, then deposit the opponent and ball into the arms of the first tier of spectators. Attackers didn't need too many warnings to get rid of the ball quickly!! You couldn't rule out the Ray's Warren and Mabbut, but for the me the choice lays between Stuart Taylor and the exceptional Harry Bamford. I'm going to settle for Stuart simply because I did have personal involvement. Vic Lamden was my postman and he suggested that as I was doing voluntary work for Rovers thro' Ron Moules (Rovers Treasurer/Secretary) I should mention the talents of a young lad he had seen playing for Longwell Green. Next season Stuart was a first team player!! Midfield player. Difficult because early doors there were only half backs and inside forwards So I will cheat and opt for that great duo Smash and Grab. The best years of my adult life watching a successful team. Was it really 28 games before they suffered their first defeat that season? AND winning eight two away to Brian Clough's Brighton. Attackers simple Rickie Lambert and Geoff Bradford!!!!
Nigel Martyn Andy Tillson David Williams Rickie Lambert That list pretty much shows how ****ing long I've suffered being a gashead
