What group or artist would it be, and what instrument or vocal would you play or sing ( regardless of talent?) I think I'd go for Fleetwood Mac and Lyndsey Buckingham as a guitarist. I'm naturally a drummer so should've gone for Tico Torres the drummer from Bon Jovi . As a bassist I think I would've gone for David Bowie
My avatar says it all, ( just picked a nice Les Paul cherry sunburst last week ) Band? Could easily be Mac, love John McVie on bass ……but probably Eagles.
Singer/bassist in Motörhead, yes I want to be Lemmy he was Rock’n’Roll. I met him once when I was working in a newsagent in Ladbroke Grove, I had an Iron Maiden t shirt on under my shirt. He approached the till and said “I know Bruce Dickinson”, I asked what was he like and his reply was “He’s a ****er”.
I’d be Stacia….the dancer from Hawkwind who often got naked on stage and had a 42 inch chest. Plus she was 6 foot 2 inch tall
Well I get to live out being in a band by proxy, watching my son bash his drums on stage - playing to a sold out King Tuts in Glasgow next week. It's weird having such a connection - I've been an avid music fan for as long as I can remember, and when he started his first band aged 13 and went on stage in front of about 12 people playing covers I thought this was as good as it would get for him. Seven years later, second band, now playing venues that hold several hundred people with hour long sets of their own material you wonder how far could they go? It's a whole different industry now though, with very little money for the smaller artists, and much harder to make that leap to the big time. What band would I love to have been in? Possibly The Doors, but would you really want the adulation that Morison had? Or replace Keith Moon in The Who....who wouldn't want the chance to smash up a few hotel rooms and hang out with Oliver Reed
I can't sing and can't play any instrument but if I could pick an instrument to be magically given the ability to play, it would be the saxophone. I just love the way a sax break takes over the stage. For that reason I'd go for Clarence Clemons from the E Street Band.
Drums it would probably be Ginger Baker; guitar would definitely be Jimi, who else (but Prince a close second for performance). All easy picks for me. Bass, now that’s very difficult. The hidden man but amazing when you hear a good bass line .. I went solely for bass (not writing, singing or any other skills) so would be between Robbie (Shakespeare) of Sly and Robbie, Bootsy Collins or Charles Mingus. The bass comes out in funk and jazz so well. If I had to go for one it would be Charles for the control and ability to freestyle bass. Lead singer: ****, so many good ones no I’m a sucker for an original voice. Between Kate Bush, Al Green, Luther Vandross or Robert Plant - all have depth of vocal talent. Went for Robert Plant who’s vocal talents were amazing and he would fit ‘my’ band of ‘me’s’. But from a different genre, Luther is the best vocalist I have ever heard live and blown away multiple times. Additionally I would want to play harmonica, just love that blues feel, would probably be Stevie Wonder. Plays amazing in any music genre as he’s proven many times. Ask me tomorrow and they could easily change
Your story got me watching this again.....Lemmy seems like a funny guy and must have been brilliant to talk to.
Great documentary, unfortunately my chat with Lemmy didn’t last long (he bought one copy of every “top shelf magazine” and a load of Marlboro). When he gave me his verdict on Bruce he had a smile on his face and a glint in his eye, he never came back in while I was there but that brief meeting stuck with me.
I always thought it funny that to the “star”, like Lemmy was, the interaction would be somewhat meaningless and “normal”….but to us, the “fan”…just the act of being friendly means so much. I had that when I met The Prodigy for the first time. Leroy chatted for ages and was amazed that I’d just paid £50 in the black market to see them and seemed honestly grateful (it was a lot back then for a gig). Always made me like them that little bit more
I’d have loved to have met Keith Flint. When I moved to Kent he worked for P&O ferries for 17 years I’ve been lucky enough to meet John Lydon and Ricky Martin who were both great people (no airs and graces) easy to talk to, answer questions, sign stuff and pose for selfies. I also had the misfortune to meet JK (Jamiroqui) and Katie Price, God only knows who they thought they were but they were too good to give anyone anytime.
Yeah I’ve heard JK is a proper bellend. I could same the same about Clarkson, Lisa Stansfield, Dave Gorman and Robson Green…..total arses. Andrew Neil, The Prodigy, David Rodigan, Damian Hurst and Chumbawamba were lovely.
I’d be Chris Stein from Blondie back in 1980. I’d not be the most accomplished guitarist, but I’d get to 5hag Debbie Harry.
