we have been perennial strugglers pretty much since our promotion to the premier league. Say we can stay up is it possible to take that next step? I would say we have one of the worst squads in the league. Constantly scraping survival will not attract good ambitious players. Most teams that become decent mid table teams seem to do it straight from promotion? Or am I way off the mark here? I honestly think it will take a lot of investment to turn the club around. I'm not sure Short is prepared to invest the sums needed? Thoughts?

"For Sunderland it is a grey groundhog day existence, a cycle of sackings and recovery that leaves them incapable of progressing, strapped to a limited squad and lacking the budget for manoeuvre"

You may want to rethink that. We signed rodwell off city so how's that not attracting players??

Bloody hell @concrete tony . You're so negative. It's been a good day stop trying to drag us all down <laugh>:p

I don't care at the moment to be honest Tony. Lets get us over the line first.

True that but it has to be done sensibly on the right players. He`s seen millions thrown away on average players and stupid wages. No wonder he`s being careful.

I think we have one of the better Squads in the bottom half of the table.
A lot of teams wouldn't mind Pants, Catts, AJ, Seb, Defoe, Wickham, PVA.
If we can stay up and add a few quality players I reckon Dick could be the man for the job.
    Chuffed to **** about today....

Well for a start who would you definitely want to keep for the next 2 years?

    Pants
    Pva
    Johnson (depending on the obvious)
    Giacch
    Seb

Now for at least the next 1 year? Includes the above already

    Catts
    Defoe
    Jones
    Oshea
    Rodwell
    Whickham
    Vergini
    Graham
    Vito

So we need to bring in a lot anyway so the dreaded "overhaul" looks certain again this summer. I've not included him as he's not in the current squad but Watmore would be in too

Jeez WG! How can you not have Catt's name top of the keep list?

He's the heart of our team!

Agree with the rest though and that leaves great big holes to fill.

I know I'm a misery at the moment. Starting drinking soon though. Yes we have to survive first. I suppose I was asking is it easier to build a good team in the championship as opposed to perennial strugglers?

I'm remaining negative until we win something it's working better than my optimism has thus far this season lol

Spot on...up to £100m needed, not sure where this would put us with respect to Financial Fair Play. Altough our expensive buys AJ, Fletch and Rodders have not scorched the grass.

We spend money, but on players like Rodwell who should be good but turn out to be a flop. Wish we could spend that money on players who turn out to be good for once.

I love catts but I feel he's part of the problem of the pitch I'd also get rid of Bally

Let's hope you never manage a football team. Catts is our outstanding outfield player this season.

Ok one man's opinion but if you have a look at what I say I dont discredit his on field contributions one jot. I clearly meant "off the pitch" and not "of the pitch" I haven't come over all continental

But on the pitch is the only place that matters. I don't care if he's a knob off the pitch, if he's a leader and an outstanding performer for those 90 minutes that's enough.

This squad needs to be tweaked, but wholesale changes are not the answer.

So what do we need - easy

    1. Manager
    2. 2 x centre halfs
    3. 1 (or more) goal scorers
    4. Decent physio - where are all our creative types (Giach, Alvarez, any others?)?
    5. Right back

    Any more?
