Little Jay Spearing seems to have this 'decent squad player' and 'good backup' label. It's not like he's 28 and going nowhere, he's still only 23 and playing far better than Lucas did at that age. He works just as hard as Lucas, has better range of passing and is still improving. It was when Lucas was 24 and the departure of Mascherano when Lucas really started to prove himself and I believe Spearing could develop sigificantly next season. Obviously in a 4-4-2 formation it wouldn't be ideal, but certainly in a 4-2-3-1 system with two adventurous fullbacks (which we have) it could be a great pairing for several years allow the likes of Gerrard/Suarez real freedom to float and punnish the opposition as well as letting the fullbacks provide the width. Why do people believe he'll never be good enough? If he had a pretty foreign name, we'd be raving about him as a future gem but no, he'll 'never be good enough' apparantly. Name change please Jay!
Good points about Jay Spearing's abilities. I like him too. BUT to say that his name or "Englishness" is putting him at a disadvantage at the club is well out of order. We have had enough of the club being associated with racism for you to even raise this again. Tell me: do we not treat and recogniuse our good english players properly? Stevie G, Jamie, are they being treated inappropriately?
I did have slight doubts about him making it at Liverpool but he has proved all the doubters wrong. The point you make about foreign names is a good one. Spearing gets no credit from anyone apart from Liverpool fans but Sky Sports and the gutter press are quite happy to go way overboard about average players like Tiote from Newcastle and Romeu from Chelsea.
What a stupid thing to say from a supposed Liverpool fan. He was not being racist at all he was simply making the point that foreign players get more credit than English players when they clearly do.
So far Jays form as been good 1 game , not so good the next Jay needs to do it regularly over say a 2 month period, he will defo get that chance over the next 2 months, as it is becoming more apparent by the week that our best CM combo while Lucas is out is Stevie/Jay
Maybe go reread what I wrote...when did I mention anything about the club? He's getting games, clearly it's a non-issue. I'm talking about the fans opinions of him and how he doesn't have the image of having a promising future.
Love Spearing always have gutsy little player who has genuine talents and would run through brick walls for the club. Well said JJ (or should that be JayJay)
I think you are being stupid if you do not recognise that what JJ said could be quite offensive to some. Like Kenny who said things which locally some fans thought were quite inoffensive but looked at more broadly could be seen as quite bad. If foreign players get more credit it is because they are better than local ones nit because they have got foreign names.
For me Spearing is too lightweight. He needs to use the gym as he's getting knocked off the ball left, right and centre. Not good enough for LFC first team and I doubt he ever will be.
"If he had a pretty foreign name, we'd be raving about him as a future gem but no, he'll 'never be good enough' apparantly. Name change please Jay! " How in ANY stretch of the imagination is that offensive? I have one of the most dull, boring english names imaginable and I see nothing wrong with that at all. Are you just trying to cause an arguement or really so sensitive that if I described him as small you'd say I was being discriminative also? Jesus christ. Why do I even bother posting on this forum?
Disagree with you there mate, Lucas, Mascherano, Hamann...none of them were/are built like the proverbial brick ****house but the more I see of Spearing the more I see his positional sense and timing improving. He certainly has areas he needs to work on but all players especially at his age need to work at there game. I have no issues with seeing his name on the team sheet and in all honesty can't remember many occassions when he's let us down.
There was an article on him not so long ago which had Opta stats for this season compared to last; he wins most his aerial duels (even for being 5'6) and most his ground duels plus about 85% tackle success rate. I think he uses what he has to great effect.
Its not a race issue at all I think you have misinterpreted the point of the article . Some players don't get the credit they deserve because they might be seen as less fashionable or happen not to play for the media darlings manure/a london club if jay was a 6 foot good looking poster boy or was called Javier he'd probably get a bit more praise/attention that's all. Not that I give a **** whether or not the London media fawn all over him but its still a relevant point to make.
I like Spearing but agree with some that he will be a squad player for us, hopefully for many years to come. I wouldn't be surprised if he did improve and become a quality player though.
El pistolero I'm not talking about height, more use of weight. If you look at the last couple of games he has been bullied and not looked like winning the ball back. His positioning has lead him to try and win the ball back from behind and just being palmed off. The three players you mention aren't built very well but read the game better and were able to bully people off the ball regardless of height. I think if you look back at his distribution as well then it wouldn't hold up against the other three either. I appreciate he's not the finished article but I feel he is never going to be first team when he is at his prime.
spearing is simply not anywhere near as good as the OP is insinuating. the comparison age for age with lucs is really really subjective and requires a look back into history and of course circumstance. spearing picks the wrong pass at times, and at times he's not i nthe right position. There's nothing WRONG with the lad par se but thats the point. he's just average. if he were in a team with better players to let him focus on just his game thats ok but with adam and henderson in there too you can see why our team was up until we played everton reserves we were being beaten. midifeld is really weak right now.
Mikey and Mito et al we will have to agree to disagree then but trust me the kid has a long future at Anfield so whether or not you lads rate him I'm thinking you'll have changed your minds about this kid sooner rather than later I for one wish him all the best and reckon he'll make the doubters eat their words.
He's certainly good enough to be in the Liverpool squad and is a real asset, he may have the quality to kick on and become a quality player and he may not but he's someone I want in the squad as he loves the club and gives his all.
I'm saying he's still relatively young but everyone talks about him like he's 28 and not going to improve. I'm not saying he's a world beater, but he shows as much promise as the others (Carroll/Hendo) at the same time as playing at a similar level to what we saw from Lucas at that age. No. He's learning. Is Hendo average? Is Carroll average? Wumming aside, people say they're young and learning, why not the same for Spearing? He's only 1 year older than Carroll... It's as much Adam and Hendo's fault as it is Spearings. Adam has been dire of late particularly against Sunderland and just throws possession back to the opposition, fouls the player or is completely out of position. No wonder the lad struggles to keep things tight in the centre.
Look I can't be arsed to explain to you further. If you can't see what's wrong then forget it. Let's get back to discuss jay's abilities rather than s ay that foreigners get more credit just because they are foreigners. There is no evidence for that assertion so you should just drop it. I also happen that Jay has got a great potential and a great future with us.
