If we lose Luka Modric and end up with 40-50m in the bank how do we replace him?

Do we stick with what we have, try possible combinations of Huddlestone, Sandro and the less disciplined Van Der Vaart? I'm forgetting Jenas and Palacios here because they don't have enough ability.

Huddlestone and Sandro seems the best option but it would be up to Tommy to provide the creative spark. I wouldn't trust VDV at CM even if that would allow us to revert to playing two up front but I'd like to see it tried in a friendly, the Europa League all the same.

We've heard Milan Badelj, who succeeded Modric at Zagreb, touted as a possible replacement, but his style seems more akin to Huddlestone's than Luka's. There has also been talk of Lassana Diarra, but we need a creator, not another Sandro.

We won't get a player of Luka's quality on the cheap, and they won't be easy to find.

All i'll say is please god, Harry - not Charlie Adam, Joe Cole, Scott Parker or Joey Barton.

Only player around that we could sign that even comes close to Luka's quality, would be Marin at Bremen. Apparently, he's a hell of a lot more loyal than our 'mate' luka though and believes he owes bremen something so doesn't want to leave. Still, despite the fact he's a left winger I reckon he's about as close as we could get to fill luka's shoes. Seems to have similar attributes imo.

Marin is an attacking player though, he would probably flop in centre mid. I think Montolivo would be a good buy.

If Modric goes then Redknapp will sign Parker (who he adores) and then take a punt on someone from abroad that he has been looking at, is this good enough? No.

Unless this club changes its transfer policy we will be in this same situation each year, sign a player like Modric, Berbatov, have them for two seasons, go close to success but just miss out, the player proves to be world class and we sell him for 30 million plus then we search for another.

When Modric is sold, we need to go out and spend big, if needed spend 20 million plus on a top top player, will that happen? No.

Why? because this club is ran too much as a business and all these "open letters" & promises are just words which only appease the naive fans out there.

You're right BigJohnny but I think the club has to be run as a business. We need to get a new stadium asap so revenue increase and then we can offer more wages and bigger transfer fees and then we can get in more quality players and compete with Chelsea, Man Utd, and Arsenal.

    Morning all,

I have been scouring the various websites- is all i can do as i am so far away.

The impression I am getting is that although all the daily papers are reporting that he wants to go- the most telling quote came from Luka's agent who said that "Luka is very happy at Tottenham and that he wants to stay and that the final decison is the chairmans".
Correct me if i have got it wrong but as far as i can see only Chesea made a "laughable" offer fully knowing that it would be rejected.
The lazy journo's have got hold of it and given it some legs. Therefore no more bids have been made and will probably be rejected anyway.

There's only one way we're going to know for sure. It's now down to Modric himself to publicly confirm or deny. At least if would end the speculation.

Luke. I hear what you're saying. However, I think it's now time to end all this rather tacky, classless, debate via the media. Modric now has to speak up - and do so directly. Not through some rather poorly stage managed media campaign.

Totally agree Nowsuffering, what is probably happening is that spurs supporters are beginning to doubt his loyalty, so until then we wait. But hopefully not for long.

Look at the gossip column LM,it states that the next Chelsea coach will be sacked if there are no trophies. Don't go there son, you're making a mistake leaving Spurs to go anywhere else in England. Stay here or go abroad. If Chelsea sack their next coach early.............disaster will follow.

If the worst comes to the worst and Modric does leave (for what it's worth, I think he'll stay), a central Spurs midfield partnership of Sandro and Huddlestone is still a very strong one.

If chelsea had a coach in place i would be worried. Will LM go to a club without knowing who he would be playing with ?

I'm still waiting for actual evidence of Modric wanting to leave

The media are not to be trusted

Spot on Alfie. I could not put it better. What if they have 2 coaches in 9 months? It will badly unsettle them. As somebody posted they dropped out of the top 4 twice last season and it was largely due to their excellent start that thy were up there and not further down. Be very careful LM.

Montolivo would be a great replacement. Wants to leave fiorentina, but we need to move quick because milan are interested. Banega of valencia and marin are also good targets who would be cheaper than the fee we recieve for luka

If/when he goes, I'd like to see van der Vaart used in his position, Marin brought in to play the role behind the striker and Parker brought in to replace the likes of Jenas, O'Hara and Palacios.
If he has to go to Chelsea, then demand Sturridge as part of the deal, if he goes to City then take Adebayor.
