Saying on the radio this morning he is on 80k a week which is too much, but 3 and a half year contract for a 32 year old who is partially reliant on his pace. I would have had him at Loftus Road on about 40k and tops a year and a half contract, but Sunderland have pulled out 'a QPR' of a transfer. Not all bad news for them I hear Jozy Altidore has gone the other way.
His mum is his agent!!! When Harry singed him at Portsmouth, his mum was haggling and told Harry that she thought if Defoe had a goals bonus it would give him the incentive to score more goals, to which Rednapp replied "I was kind of hoping the 50,000 a week would do that".
At the moment it's just money being reported. I'm not convinced we would pay anybody 80k pw. About 60k, I would imagine. Believe it or not Altidore is apparently on 40k and has scored 1 goal in about 70 premier league games. Unbelievable transfer/swap.
I guess my point is Harry knows he's a bit of a mercenary but his thoughts are only on his own survival. Blinkered by that he'd sign anyone he knows on silly money if he could. Harry knows he's a money grabbing bast*rd (i.e. the modern footballer) and yet he would quite happily had him signed up on a tasty contract with us and saddled the club with the debt and another aging player. It'd have been the club that got shafted long after Harry has left and joined the local golf club.
His wages were too high and so I'm glad we haven't got him. However, if his goals help to keep Sunderland up they'll think it was worth every penny. We have 16 million pounds worth in the injured (but a good player) Sandro and the very average Mutch!
Here's the plan. When we play up there in a couple of weeks, Rio starts, breaks Defoe's leg in the first minute and is banned. Win win.
