Bristol City and Bristol Rovers fans could return to stadiums in September in Carabao Cup plans
The early rounds of the Carabao Cup in September could be used as test events to get supporters back to live sporting events

The Carabao Cup could be used for early test events as football looks to follow other sports in bringing fans back.

The new season is set to get underway in the Premier League and EFL on September 12, although fans will not be able to attend games as protocol continues amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Some sports though have begun allowing fans to return to events, with the World Snooker Championship final acting as a test event as around 300 spectators have been allowed into the Crucible, a venue which normally seats 1,000.

As part of the test, fans have been given an extensive code of conduct, including no contact with anyone outside their social bubble, and bringing their own food and drink.

Face masks have to be worn while moving around the venue, while entry is allowed only 30 minutes before a session starts and exits are organised one row at a time.

On the test event, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: "We can now make further careful progress on recovery with allowing audiences back for indoor performances, fans back at sports events and the reopening of more Covid-19 secure leisure businesses."

That could lead to a limited number of fans being allowed back into football games, with the opening rounds of the Carabao Cup being touted as a possibility.

The Athletic report that the Community Shield game between Liverpool and Arsenal at Wembley had been hoped to be used, but the suspension of test events earlier in the summer ended hopes of fans being able to attend.

September’s early rounds of the Carabao Cup or EFL Trophy could provide an opportunity though.

Every ground is expected to undertake a rehearsal, likely with games that would take in around half of the venue’s revised capacity.

having been starved of football for best part of 6 months the danger is there will an overwhelming response … also a likelihood of blackmarket ticket sales as it would be "all ticket" … and likelihood of fake tickets so a rather big mess !!!!!

Based on the figure allowed at snooker 300 for every 1000, Ashton Gate Stadium holds 27000 plus that means you could have a legal gate of over 8100, could that be managed, how would the tickets be allocated for a Carabao Cup game.

I wouldn't take a chance because I fall into the vunerable age range and I would be scared ****less of catching the virus but what about other, braver souls?

At 66 I suppose I fit into the vulnerable age range but I regard myself as pretty fit and take care as much as I can. I would be happy to go.

I'd think about it, if it was reasonably priced and it was possible to properly social distance. My main concern is infecting others, but if we're able to go to bars and restaurants I don't see why segregated groups couldn't do the same at football. Though it's the concourses that would worry me.

There's also a big difference between a Carabao Cup game and say, a derby against Cardiff. I'd trust people to social distance a lot better in the former. As soon as there's some rowdiness it could go all out the window!

I’m not confident enough yet to go to a football match. I’m even a bit nervous about going to a pub and sitting inside.
I’m self isolating at the moment following my return from holiday - just over a week to go, but although the rules have been relaxed I am still working from home and don’t go out anywhere near as much as I used to before this bloody disease.

See, to me that's the whole point.

Listen to the advice and decide exactly the way that as an individual you want to act.

I had a friend who went to his 2nd home in France, he knew that the UK were threatening to put France on the self isolation list and also knew that decision could be made at any time and at the drop of the hat, not happy but hey 'you pays yer money' and all that.

I had to look in desperation earlier this week at 2 news stories next to each other, one said 'people of Asian descent 5 times more likely to catch covid than white people' and the other described 'police coming under attack from hordes of presumably people of Pakistani origin celebrating Pakistan's independence day.

.. Yes and that's what I've done with my recent holiday. I only need to self-isolate for 1 week, because I spent my final week abroad in Gibraltar which is on the 'green' travel list of safe countries. I'm not 'happy' with having to isolate, but I accept the rules and adhere to them.
The thing that worries me is that the wife and I breezed through the border checkpoint at Bristol Airport and the security there didn't check our special travel form that I'd spent lots of time completing the previous day. Admittedly they might have been trying to be 'nice' as I was having trouble opening the email I was sent with the completed document as a PDF, but there were no official instruction to self-isolate at all - only some internet guidelines, which you can look up online if you feel inclined to do so.
As a 'good citizen' I will comply, but I'm sure lots of people will just ignore the 'self isolation' requirement and behave as normal. There doesn't seem to be any way of tracing us - I can't believe that our immigration service is able to automatically trace what I do and where I go.
I also question the point of Self Isolation in my own particular case; my adult son and youngest daughter both live with us in the same house. The rules say that they do NOT have to isolate - yet we are coming into close contact with them on a daily basis. If my wife and I DO have COVID then they will catch it for sure and spread it around as they go about their daily lives. Added to that the significant rise in cases here in Swindon whilst I've been away I would probably want to be VERY careful out and about anyway.
As I said, I always try to be a good citizen and I won't be going anywhere near other people until the isolation period officially expires next Sunday - exactly 2 weeks after I left Spain and walked across the border into Gib.

had some in depth chats today about outdoors activity … the key phrase was "it only takes one" …. every Thursday evening for the past 7 weeks we have gone for an evening walk. Primarily based from cheddar and lasting 2+ something hours ranging from 3 miles to 7 miles and invariably getting up to almost 1000ft above sea level [ 5 times ]. On a Thursday most pubs are quiet … so plenty space and not yet to cold to sit out. Tuesday last 4 weeks have been in a pub but nearest table is about 1.5+ metre away [ gap between the seats ] getting there about 9pm usually only 3 of 8 tables in use. Plenty sanitiser and staff very well conversed with procedure …..
The first visit was the worst! …. our groups are fairly compact but each has 1 or 2 that goes between all 3 hence …"it only takes one" …. <yikes>
guidelines are "not" that clear [ open to interpretation ] although self preservation helps!
